Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean limiting your options or compromising on flavor anymore, certainly not in Detroit. From Asian to Mexican cuisines and soul food to pizza, some of the city’s best restaurants offer delicious and satisfying vegetarian and vegan options. These are not the city’s 10 best strictly vegetarian restaurants, but, in our opinion, some of the best restaurants for vegetarians.

Cacao Tree Cafe

Cafe, Contemporary

Up in Royal Oak, the Cacao Tree Cafe specializes in vegan and raw food, offering soups, sandwiches, snacks, and desserts, plus juices and smoothies. The team behind the café believes in using fresh, local ingredients to create nourishing and delicious dishes that benefit both the community and the ecosystem.

Inn Season Cafe

Cafe, Contemporary

Also in Royal Oak, the Inn Season Cafe is a long-established haven for vegetarians, offering a vast array of organic vegan and vegetarian dishes with an international flair since 1981. Its inventive world cuisine ensures there’s an option for everyone, complete with burgers, pizza, stir-fry, and Mexican fare—all made with the finest seasonal and locally grown ingredients.

Detroit Vegan Soul

Restaurant, Vegan

Offering a unique and healthy spin on soul food, Detroit Vegan Soul has two locations in Detroit. Some of the many traditional soul food dishes reimagined through a vegan lens are Southern fried tofu, seitan pepper steak, smothered tempeh and “catfish”-style tofu, available with cornbread muffins, okra, and collard greens.

Seva Detroit

Restaurant, Bar, Juice Bar, Contemporary

Seva opened a second location in Detroit after years of success in Ann Arbor. Its eclectic, 100% vegetarian menu features a range of familiar world cuisine, with everything from spaghetti and tempeh-walnut meatballs to pad Thai, and from artichoke po boys to burritos. It also has a juice bar and a range of indulgent, house-made desserts.

ima

Restaurant, Asian

Down in trendy Corktown, this Asian noodle house has a bevy of creative offerings for vegans and carnivores alike. Soups, rice, and curries are all available vegan, with roasted and sesame tofu bringing the protein. For dessert, don’t miss the vegan strawberries and cream with vanilla-tofu custard, and don’t forget the extensive sake menu.

Om Cafe

Cafe, Contemporary

Ferndale’s cozy Om Cafe has been one of the city’s best options for vegetarians since 1985. On top of its varied 100% vegetarian menu, remember its daily specials, from Smothered Tempeh dinners on Mondays, Pasta Thursdays and classic BBQ Dinners on Friday night, as well as vegetarian brunch on Saturdays.

Thang Long Thai & Vietnamese

Restaurant, Asian

For a tasty, healthy and unfussy option, Thang Long in Madison Heights has some of the city’s best Asian food, with an extensive menu of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine that includes many vegetarian and vegan dishes. Fried tofu, salads, stir-fries, soups, and curries are all waiting to delight.

Pie-Sci

Pizzeria, Italian

Although not a 100% vegetarian pizzeria, Pie-Sci has made offering vegetarian and vegan pizza a science. Alongside the many vegetarian and vegan options already on the menu, most pizzas can be made vegan for a small extra charge. The inventive menu features Asian, Mexican, and other creative options for your pie.

Anita’s Kitchen

Restaurant, Middle Eastern

For over 30 years, Anita’s Kitchen has seen the Farah family bring a taste of their native Lebanon to Detroit. Offering a vast array of Mediterranean items, from cold mezza (think hummus and eggplant) to falafel platters and spinach pies, you’ll be spoiled for choice by how many vegetarian options there are.

El Asador

Restaurant, Mexican

El Asador is technically a steakhouse, but don’t let that put you off as it has a wide variety of vegetarian and even vegan options. Its modern take on Mexican food includes some of the city’s best tacos, quesadillas, burritos and enchiladas, all available vegetarian.
