Baltimore’s love may run deep for crab and seafood, but there’s no shortage of great vegetarian and vegan fare in the city either. In fact, there are vegetarian- and vegan-friendly restaurants across the spectrum, from the casual to the trendy and fancy. Here are some of the best.

Located within the American Visionary Art Museum (which is a fantastic museum), Encantada focuses on sustainable food and has a way with making vegetables exciting. Just like the space, which is fun, colorful, and filled with art, the food is visually stimulating, tasty, and creative. It’s not exclusively vegetarian, but their vegetarian dishes are standouts. The spicy Nashville-style cauliflower, mushroom tacos, and cauliflower steak are all delicious, and you can be sure that on their changing seasonal menu, you are bound to find some mouthwatering vegetarian options.

If you are not familiar with Afghan cuisine, you might not know that they have a fantastic variety of vegetarian dishes, and the classic Baltimore restaurant Helmand is no exception. Start with one of the appetizers; the “kaddoo borwani” (baked baby pumpkin) or the “bowlawni” (pan-fried pastry filled with leeks and potatoes) are both great options. Choose from one of their many vegetarian entrées, including the “Aushak,” which are Afghan-style ravioli, and the stuffed bell pepper—you really can’t go wrong!

6. Woodberry Kitchen
