The wild, rocky coastal state of Maine is known for many things – lobster rolls, historic lighthouses, moose and Stephen King – among them. From Portland to Camden, Culture Trip will assist in finding the best bed and breakfast in Maine for your trip, whether you’re looking for peace and quiet, harbor views, or quaint historic homes.
This lovely Inn has old-world charm. Built in 1874, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Named after its seafaring original owner, the elegant chambers have monikers like Port of Call Dublin or Port of Call London. Rooms at this B&B in Searsport, Maine, have unique amenities such as an antique chandelier, clawfoot cast-iron tub, and four-poster bed. Breakfast is multi-course, usually consisting of a cold starter, such as fruit or yogurt, followed by a sweet or savory hot dish, like their famous chicken and waffles.
The Hawthorn Inn is conveniently located just steps from Camden Harbor and minutes from the centre of town. Innkeepers Ted and Lisa prepare a two-course breakfast daily, the first course is a fruit dish, and the second a hot one, such as sweet potato pancakes or a zucchini frittata. Many of the cheery and light-filled rooms at this Maine bed and breakfast come with whirlpool tubs, others have private balconies and decks, gas-log fireplaces, leather loveseats, and views of the harbor.
A sunshine-yellow exterior welcomes guests to this quaint bed and breakfast in Maine. The main house holds a three-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living room, and the guest rooms have queen or full-sized beds with showers. The cottage has three private rooms and a fully equipped one-bedroom apartment. The B&B is in the centre of town with shops and restaurants all easily walkable. A full breakfast is available to be added for a per-person fee.
Only an eight-minute walk to town, this Federal-style home is named after the owners, Don and Gwenda Pryor. The three rooms are classically decorated with unique features. The Captain’s Room is the largest with a view of the Kennebec River and an adjacent bathroom, the Elizabeth Room has a generous ensuite bathroom, and the Tall Chimney Room has a hot tub and private balcony. Gwenda cooks the included breakfasts with tasty dishes such as bacon onion quiche and cheese danishes.
Owners Nadine and Brad do their best to keep guests fed at the picturesque Atlantean Cottage B&B in Bar Harbor, Maine. Savor gourmet breakfast dishes in the family dining room. Start with fresh fruit followed by a gourmet entree such as huevos rancheros or ratatouille. In the afternoon, find a fresh-baked treat along with tea and coffee in the butler’s pantry. The sophisticated guest rooms and suites have ensuite bathrooms, mini-fridges, robes, and bath products from Gilchrist and Soames.
The pretty slate-blue inn was built in 1806 but, never fear, today the rooms are modernized with flat-screen TVs, private baths, luxurious towels, and most even have a gas fireplace. Rooms are individually decorated with four-poster beds, floral wallpaper, and patterned quilts. The two-course breakfast is served on the garden patio or historic keeping room and consists of staples like scrambled eggs, French toast, fresh fruit, and yogurt. Innkeepers Gary and James, along with their cat Tinker, and dog Sadie, provide a warm welcome.
Set on 65 acres, surrounded by a smattering of trees, is the Old Saco Inn. The riverbank property with its views of White Mountain will help you reset and get back to nature. The main lodge houses five of the guest rooms and the lounge, pub, and dining room. The nearby Carriage House offers three rooms and a suite, all with outside seating areas. The comfortable rooms come with deluxe linens, flat-screen TVs and private bathrooms.
This peaceful Victorian-style B&B in Maine is the perfect restful getaway with its views of the sea, crackling fireplaces, and secluded location. Your hostess, Caroline, serves up a gourmet three-course breakfast in the sunny breakfast room, which includes Caroline’s specialty, Swiss bircher muesli. The dreamy rooms all have private bathrooms, Gilchrest and Soames products, fluffy robes, pillow-top mattresses, and no TVs. Some rooms have fireplaces, claw-foot tubs, bay views, private balconies, or small sitting areas.
Have an intimate experience at the four guestroom Chadwick. The Queen Anne-style house was built in 1891, but the homey rooms have been recently renovated. Each comes with smart TVs with streaming access, white-noise machines, a cosy electric fireplace, and towelling robes. The Baxter Room has a private deck overlooking the firepit and garden. Chat to innkeepers Scot and Jason over a hot breakfast using fresh ingredients from local grocers, food stands and farmers markets.
Regal and elegant, the historic Captain Lord Mansion was once the home of a Maine sea merchant and shipbuilder. On a quiet residential street, this Kennebunkport bed and breakfast is a quick stroll from the shops and restaurants at Dock Square. The sumptuous guest rooms come with flat-screen TVs, gas fireplaces, lush robes, and hypo-allergenic bedding. Each morning guests can relax in the common area while enjoying egg dishes, overnight oats, fresh fruit, and baked goods.
The romantically regal rooms at the Victorian Berry Inn all offer fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, jetted showers, ensuite bathrooms, plush robes, Gilchrist and Soames toiletries, and flat-screen TVs. Start your day right with a full breakfast, including pastries, fruit, and hot entrees, in the dining room. Guest favourites include raspberry-stuffed French toast and poached pears with yogurt. On top of that, tea, coffee, Maine-produced Gifford’s ice cream, and the Berry Manor’s famous pies are always available in the property’s two guest pantries.
Gorgeous rustic-chic details abound at this secluded getaway, set on 12 acres (5ha) of farmland and forest. Built in 1763 and restored in 2018, four of the rooms are inside the original building, and eight are in the renovated barn. A breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt, homemade scones, and egg dishes from the farm’s hens is served in the cosy keeping room. Relax in the serene communal spaces or stroll the lovely grounds, making sure to say hello to pygmy goats Abbie and Ellie.

We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day.
