The exciting but often challenging living conditions in Jakarta have led many of its residents to develop a love-hate relationship with the city. Fortunately, Jakartans have more than enough places nearby for a getaway. Discover the best day trips from Jakarta, from its satellite cities to a nearby island paradise.

Bogor

During Indonesia’s colonial era, Bogor was a favorite getaway for Dutch administrators. They even built a vast, elegant palace complex with lush trees and hundreds of deer, still there today. Located only one hour’s drive from Jakarta, Bogor is as a quick fix trip for those who crave nature after being in Jakarta’s concrete jungle for too long. The satellite town is also home to the Bogor Botanical Garden, the oldest and one of the biggest botanical gardens in Southeast Asia. Bogor also has abundant modern attractions, such as restaurants, shopping malls, cafés, and more.

1. Anyer

Resort

Anyer has been a popular beach getaway destination for Jakartans for decades. The area has grown into a well-developed beach resort town, less than three hours’ drive from the capital. Tourists can either relax while enjoying the magnificent sunsets, fresh seafood, and cool breeze, or go crazy with water sports and exploring the nearby islands.

Bandung

A four hours road trip leads to the charming Bandung, also the capital of the West Java Province. For decades, Bandung has managed to keep a good balance of pristine nature and modern lifestyle attractions: restaurants, resorts, cafés, concept stores. In fact, many lifestyle attractions (especially culinary ones) have found a way to integrate with nature — tourists can expect gorgeous jungle, mountain, or lake views with every meal.

Pulau Bidadari (Bidadari Island) is part of the massive archipelago of Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands), off the north coast of Jakarta. The archipelago offers a wide selection of stunning islands, but Bidadari Island is one of the nearest, so can be explored on a short day trip. Other than its idyllic beaches and white smooth sand, this island also features a historical fortress, built during the colonial era. The nearby small islands of Pulau Onrust, Cipir, and Kelor are also worth visiting for more historical buildings and wildlife.

3. Puncak

A highland area near Bogor, Puncak attracts weekly crowds from Jakarta. Every weekend and public holiday, this vast natural reserve is packed with urban people, who stay in the hundreds of villas in the area. The main highlight of Puncak is the expansive tea garden, with calm views. Puncak also has fun activities for everyone, from horse riding and parasailing to shopping and relaxing.

Tangerang

Another satellite city to Jakarta, Tangerang is a new up-and-coming lifestyle mecca. New, modern shopping malls and lifestyle centers are being built every year, and have fewer crowds and less traffic than Jakarta. Tangerang also hosts high-end residences and a number of natural and historical sites, such as the Benteng Heritage Museum and Situ Gintung garden.
