The Heights is a hip neighborhood located in northwest-central Houston. It’s filled with trendy restaurants and cafes plus funky shops, including thrift stores and antique shops. Here are the best restaurants in the area.

Down House

Down House

The Down House is a hip restaurant, coffee shop, and bar that was created in September 2010 by Joey Treadway and Chris Cusack. It serves a variety of lunch, dinner, brunch, and late-night small plates until 2am daily. Most of the menu comprises interesting combinations and local foods from the area. This restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere with a refreshing ambience. Their cocktails combine a variety of fun ingredients such as lemon, rose, ginger, vanilla, and citrus. Whether it is the kimchi burger or a fun cocktail combination, they are sure to have something that will satisfy your tastebuds.

Liberty Kitchen

Bar, Restaurant, American, Vegetarian, Cocktails, Beer, Wine

Liberty Kitchen is one of the most popular restaurants in the Heights and specializes in seafood cuisine with a Cajun influence. Serving a variety of fried seafood, grilled fish, steaks, burgers, and many other delicious dishes, they also serve breakfast on the weekends. This restaurant has a great atmosphere with a large wrap-around patio to enjoy great food while over looking the Heights. The same owners behind BRC Gastropub and Petite Sweets opened Liberty Kitchen in November 2011. They also serve a variety of alcoholic beverages, including Texas beer, spirits at the bar, and special cocktails.

Coltivare

Bar, Restaurant, Italian, Vegetarian

Coltivare is an Italian restaurant that has a variety of small plates, salads, house-made pastas and wood oven-fired pizzas. It has a rustic wooden interior with a preference for a family-dining concept. Behind the restaurant is a 3,000-square-foot garden that provides fresh seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs for Coltivare’s delicious dishes. The restaurant’s owners make it a priority to build relationships with local farmers for fresh beef, dairy, and seafood products. Alcoholic drinks are also available, complete with an impressive wine list and full service bar.

The Glass Wall’s menu is formulated from the owners’ own travels and experiences. Named after a centerpiece glass wall that separates the open kitchen from the main dining room, the restaurant provides high-quality simple ingredients into all of its dishes. The bistro-style menu changes depending on the freshest, seasonal ingredients available. Both brunch and dinner are served, and many of the dinner items are paired with a complementary wine. They have a variety of starters such as, crawfish ravioli, sizzling beef stir-fry, and Moroccan spiced lollipop lamb chops. Some of the main dishes are cornflake chicken fried steak, veal scallopini, and Hereford beef tenderloin.

Carter & Cooley

In 2009, Carter and Cooley won the Best of Houston award for Best Atmosphere and Sandwich Shop. They have been serving incredible BLTs, Reubens, soups, salads, and desserts for more than 25 years. The freshest breads, meats, cheeses, and veggies are also available to order. They have many loyal customers who return again and again to savor the tasty eats. The atmosphere is extremely charming with a quaint, vintage feel. Inside the sandwich shop, there are pictures, which represent the Historic Houston Heights street scenes, people, and homes. Many of these no longer exist.
