Houston Scream Fest

The largest “haunted festival” in Texas, ScreamFest is a month-long event open Friday to Sunday every weekend in October, until 1 November. It offers haunted houses with different themes and paintball attractions, as well as Halloween merchandise to buy, Halloween-themed carnival games with prizes to win, and food and drink stands. A stage is also set up to host a different concert every night of this annual festival of fear. Tickets for the lot are $60 and include drinks.

The Haunted Trails

Think you don’t fright easily? A walk through the creepy woods at the Haunted Trails attraction (located a 20-minute drive from downtown Houston) might change that. All kinds of ghoulish creatures are waiting in the dark to jump out and scare you, and the fact that they are played by elaborately costumed actors doesn’t seem to stop the screaming. In addition to the haunted woods, there’s also a 3D attraction called Psycho Hollow. If you want to avoid lengthy queues during Halloween season, spend an extra $10 for the Speed Pass, which takes you straight to the front of the line.

Redrum Fear Park

Redrum is found in the Texan town of Richmond, just a 40-minute drive southwest of Houston. It’s well worth the trip, offering four extravagantly detailed haunted house attractions, complete with actors who are perhaps a little too convincing. Be entertained by grotesque creatures in the 3D Twisted Circus; watch Redrum’s version of horror classics at the Cinegore; undergo “scream therapy” in the Deadwood Asylum; or test your wits and reactions in the post-apocalyptic battleground that is Lazer Fury.

13th Floor Haunted House

Arguably Houston City’s premier haunted house attraction, 13th Floor employs some of the most convincing and committed horror actors for miles around. Drawing on all the superstitions of the 13th floor, there is the chance to connect with tormented spirits in the Deadly Reflections attraction and practice your axe-throwing abilities (in case you were doubting them) at “Class Axe Throwing”.
