The craft coffee boom of the past few decades had its roots in Seattle, but across the continent in Florida’s largest city, Jacksonville, caffeine connoisseurs are beginning to jump on the bandwagon and provide high quality brews for their customers. To find out what all the fuss is about, check out one of the hip places on this list and get a taste for the USA’s new wave of artisan coffee.

Bold Bean Coffee Roasters

Bold Bean’s small batch coffees are roasted on site in their gas-fired San Franciscan SF-75 drum roaster, which grants the staff control over every aspect of the roast. They are also committed to sustainable and direct trade agreements with their producers, from whom they source for ‘clarity, sweetness and uniqueness.’ It is for these reasons that Jacksonville Magazine chose them as the best coffee in the city. They also offer homemade syrups, ranging in flavor from vanilla to cardamom, to complement their already top draw coffee.

Sippers Coffeehouse

This small neighborhood coffeehouse has been owned and operated by Matt and Marcy Staley since 2009 and has a motto appropriate for a family business that prides itself on knowing their customers by name: ‘friendship begins with a cup of kindness.’ In addition to the warm welcome, you can also choose from one of three drip coffees here, as well as a French press, a chai latte blended in house, and a range of some 26 flavors to be added to your chosen beverage, which include English toffee, graham cracker, cinnamon, and blueberry.

The Coffee Grinder

Over 60 types of coffee beverages are available for purchase at The Coffee Grinder, including café au lait, a chocolate mint latte, and the Coconut Cream, which comes with chunks of real unsweetened coconut. They serve coffee from esteemed Pacific Northwest roasters Panache, as well as blends of single-origin coffees. The Kenya AA, for example, has a medium body with notes of fruit and a wine-like acidity, while the Colombia Supremo Roast is a premium variety which has a rich flavor and aroma. The café also exhibits artwork from local artists and hosts DJs who spin trance and progressive house.

Originally operating out of a caravan in Jacksonville’s Hemming Park, Vagabond Coffee Co. have now expanded to a permanent brick and mortar location thanks in part to a crowdfunding campaign started by proprietor Will Morgan. Using a top of the range Diedrich roaster, Morgan and his team serve up cold brews, cappuccinos, agave lattes, cortados, and everything in between. Accompanying the coffee on the menu are homemade pop tarts and delectable peanut butter and sea salt cookies dipped in chocolate, which can be enjoyed in chic surroundings that feature tables and counters made from repurposed materials.

BREW Five Points

Here at BREW Five Points they blend the classic Italian espresso tradition with the advances made possible by new brewing technology. The friendly and knowledgeable baristas have faith in the purity of their coffee’s flavor; as such they don’t offer any flavored syrups and only use whole milk (if any at all). As a craft beer and espresso bar they have a rotating selection of coffees from the country’s top roasters, as well as five microbrews on tap at any one time. Stop in for a drink and a plate of artisan toast from local bakery Community Loaves.
