Are you craving a hearty meal in the 3-0-5? The city boasts a number of institutions perfecting the art of soul food and friendly, Southern hospitality. Here’s a roundup of our favorites.

Jackson Soul Food

Restaurant, American

Nestled in historic Overtown, Jackson Soul Food has been satisfying bellies since 1946, and it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu includes waffles and eggs with grits and fried catfish with homemade buttery biscuits. Kids’ meals are only $4, and everything else is pretty modestly priced. Bring your appetite.

The Empty Plates Restaurant

Restaurant, American

DJ Khaled’s personal chef opened up a restaurant in April of 2017 in the Little River neighborhood. It serves soul food, and yes, it’s a success. De’Bronya Hodges, otherwise known as Chef Dee, makes specialties like crab cake bites with Dang Dang sauce, jerk chicken pasta and blackened salmon with homemade coleslaw, and mac and cheese. You might just be dining alongside other celebrities for only about $10–13 a plate, and yes, you’ll empty that plate.

World Famous Rib Shack & Seafood

Restaurant, American, Seafood

There’s nothing like a well-made rib sandwich and pot pie, and World Famous Rib Shack spoils us with good eating and Southern hospitality. Famous for its ribs, seafood, and friendly service, people who venture here once become loyal clients.

Walter’s Coffee Shop

Restaurant, Cafe, American, Coffee

First opening its doors in the ’60s in Long Island, New York, this family-owned restaurant in Palmetto Bay serves American food favorites along with finger-licking soul food. Referred to simply as “The Shop,” Walter’s menu features staple dishes such as chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, honey barbecue chicken wings, and a number of pies to finish off on a sweet note. The restaurant offers daily menu specials as well as a happy hour with a set of TVs so that you’ll never miss a game. A crew of friendly servers and a pleasant family environment make this spot a local best-kept secret.

Lil Greenhouse Grill

Restaurant, American, BBQ

Lil Greenhouse Grill got its start as a local food truck before settling down in Overtown. The restaurant offers lunch and dinner, cooking up seafood cakes and smoked barbecue ribs paired with collard greens and mashed potatoes. Complete with delicious cornbread and excellent service, this place is an all-star.
