Colorado has it all – choose from the arid desert, the snow-capped Rocky Mountains, or busy cities like Denver and Boulder. After a day of hiking, skiing or white-water rafting in the fresh mountain air, take your pick and lay your head in one of these cosy, quaint and historic B&Bs.

1. The Queen Anne Urban Bed & Breakfast, Denver

Unique touches abound at this eco-sensitive designed property. The rooms are uniquely themed, and the four suites are individually decorated by a local artist. Some have antique tubs, garden views, canopy beds, whirlpool tubs, original murals and gas or wood fireplaces. The locally sourced breakfast, with hot and cold dishes, is served each morning at the communal table or in the sunlit garden, from which many of the fresh ingredients are sourced. Chat with other guests over wine and cheese at the evening happy hour.

2. The Ruby of Crested Butte, Crested Butte

The garnet-red clapboard exterior welcomes guests to the aptly named Ruby, surrounded by mountainous peaks in historic downtown Crested Butte. Owners Gail Riley and Tom Statzell have enjoyed Highland Haven for more than 40 years. Surrounded by blue spruce trees, it’s within walking distance of Main Street and only a 25-minute drive from the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. The modern accommodations are varied with suites, cottages and guest rooms. The romantic TreeHouse Suite is two stories with a jacuzzi. 4. Wild Horse Inn, Fraser

The Wild Horse Inn was constructed from rock and 400-year-old logs and is surrounded by rugged natural beauty. The main lodge has seven rooms with private baths, some with balconies, decks or fireplaces. Three cabins with kitchenettes offer more privacy and the opportunity to bring along your furry buddy. A sweet or savory hot breakfast is served daily, and trail lunches are available for purchase. Choose a book from the library and snuggle up in front of the Great Room fireplace while admiring the mountain views.

The red-brick Old Town Guesthouse was built in 1997 in historic Old Colorado City, with shops and restaurants just a few steps away. The unique guestrooms, with names like African Orchid and Victorian Rose, offer views of Pikes Peak, waterbeds, double sinks in the bathrooms and most feature fireplaces, hot tubs or steam showers. Owners and Innkeepers Charles and Melissa Fletcher will be on hand to welcome you to the Victorian-style China Clipper, in the Switzerland of America. A perfect spot for families looking for a mountain getaway, several of the rustic mountain-chic rooms feature bunk beds or sofa sleepers.
