While many of the top restaurants in SoMa have been around for some time, the past five years have seen the inception of a movement toward upscale, fresh and local food. With cuisines ranging from French to Korean, visitors are sure to find satisfying and delicious food in any price range.

1. Deli Board

The Deli Board began in 2009 as a small catering business and has been selling sandwiches from their location in SoMa ever since. It represents East Coast deli flavors with a California twist, creating fresh sandwiches, salads and soups. With creative rotating specials, customers are guaranteed to get something new and unexpected with each visit.

Those searching for a special meal will find it at Saison, a restaurant that truly strives to channel the bounty of the season in order to perfectly craft a menu. They offer a multi-course menu that is constantly changing based upon which ingredients are fresh and available. Prices of food and wine vary night to night based upon the menu and can be discovered in advance by calling the restaurant.

3. Prospect

Bar, Restaurant, American

Serving contemporary American food and open for dinner and lunch on weekdays, Prospect is an attractive dining option. Customers can have a casual meal at the bar or opt for a relaxed experience at the communal table in the main dining area. The menu is inspired by seasonal and local ingredients and features an extensive wine list, creating nearly endless and ever-changing options.

4. Zero Zero

Serving up brunch, lunch and dinner, this neighborhood Italian spot has become well known for its craft cocktails, pizza and thoughtfully crafted salads and small plates. With wood-fired brick oven pizza at its core, it is no wonder that Zero Zero has gained so much popularity since its opening in 2010.

Marlowe is a neighborhood bistro serving up a menu using high-quality meats for lunch and dinner, Marlowe has become a particularly popular spot in SoMa. The Marlowe Burger is a crowd-pleaser, served with caramelized onions, cheddar, bacon, horseradish aioli and fries. Those looking for a more sophisticated feel will find items like steak tartare, oysters and even bone marrow.

6. HRD Coffee Shop

For a less upscale and equally delicious meal, visitors to SoMa should check out HRD Coffee Shop, a popular fusion restaurant serving everything from burritos and tacos to cheesesteaks and po’ boys. The innovative fusion menu combines Korean and Mexican cuisines, with items like shrimp katsu-smothered burritos and bulgogi beef rice bowls served with brown rice.

7. District

Wine Bar, Bar, Charcuterie, Pub Grub

Offering dinner as well as Sunday brunch, District is designed to create a cohesive and enjoyable dining experience. Using fresh and local ingredients, chef Bob Cina carefully crafts dishes that are perfectly shareable. Over 40 wines are offered by the glass and are easily paired with the food.
