Let’s say you have a hankering to do some country line dancing, like the electric slide, or the tush-push, or maybe a little Texas two-step. Maybe you just want to go someplace where you can relax, knock back some cold beers, and listen to country music. Thankfully, there are places all over the Los Angeles area where you can do just that. So put on your jeans, boots, and cowboy hat, and dance the night away at one of the locations listed below; remember, it’s good exercise as well.

Cowboy Palace Saloon

Out in the far northwestern regions of the San Fernando Valley, in the city of Chatsworth, is the Cowboy Palace Saloon. A friendly, homey spot for both seasoned and beginner country dancers, the Cowboy Palace is open every night of the week. This bar has been featured in numerous music videos, TV shows, and movies. It has a bar underneath a display of hanging boots and cowboy hats, wood decor, and signed photos of country music stars. It also has a medium-sized dance floor, two pool tables and a stage where live bands perform.
Monday night is ‘talent night,’ where amateurs can test their performance skills. The Country Palace Saloon is busiest on Sundays, when they offer free dance lessons from 4 to 5 p.m. At 5 p.m., whoever buys a drink is given a plate for the dinner buffet at no extra cost. Once customers have all chowed down, they return to the dance floor for more dance lessons from 6 to 7 p.m. Then, a music-venues-in-san-francisco-/”>live band takes the stage and couples dance the Texas two-step while others drink, play pool or just hang out and listen to the music.

Cowboy Country Saloon

At the other end of the city, in the South Bay city of Long Beach, is the Cowboy Country Saloon. This country bar looks like a big red barn from the outside. Inside are three dance floors on two levels, a poolroom, a full restaurant and two bars. Open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the Cowboy Country Saloon offers dance lessons from 7 to 7:30 p.m. and 8 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free from 6 to 7 p.m. and $5.00 after 7 p.m. Local country bands perform most nights. On Friday nights—for the daring and acrobatic—there is a mechanical bull to ride in the upstairs dance floor. Some Saturday afternoons they offer dance workshops so dancers-in-training can hone their skills for the dance floor. Consult their website for special events, dates and times.

Montana’s

To the east of Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley city of San Dimas, is Montana’s. This country western hot spot is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and for special events. It opens at 6 p.m. with a cover fee of $5 ($10 after 9 p.m.) and offers two-step lessons every Friday night at 7 p.m. and line dancing lessons every Saturday at 7 p.m. In lieu of live bands, DJ’s play plenty of Country-Western music, and even some pop numbers later on Saturday nights when the younger crowd arrives. Most Fridays and Saturdays, the large dance floor is crowded with people dancing under a disco ball shaped like a horse saddle.
