Fine line or single needle tattoos are the latest tat craze out of Los Angeles, and they’re so elegant that even your grandparents will be into them!

LA-based celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo is responsible for this chic and understated tattoo technique now taking over the world. Forget bold colours and thick lines, cartoons, full sleeves and massive chest pieces – single needle tattoos are delicate, intricate and absolutely stunning.

These incredibly detailed works of body art will match as well with black-tie get-ups as they will with a simple t-shirt and jeans. It seems there is finally a tattoo trend that will appeal to even the fussiest of individuals.

The technique involves using just one needle to get the ink on your skin, instead of the traditional eight. The result is an ultra-fine line from which the style gets its name. This means that no image is really off limits when it comes to your single needle tat. The trend works great for writing, shading, intricate designs and the tiniest of symbols.

Dr. Woo was inspired by his mentor, the legendary Mark Mahoney of Shamrock Social Club in LA ,and started posting his creations of the minimalist technique on Instagram.

This led to the trend truly exploding, with Woo tatting the likes of Miley Cyrus and Drake among others, and now the small, chic and super curated tattoos are officially all the rage.

A big plus of single needle tattooing is that you can achieve way more detail than with traditional eight-needle technique. This means that you can tattoo previously taboo areas such as your knuckles, and not have to worry about the quality.
