Forget Paris and book your flights to LAX immediately. Because the best couples holiday ever awaits you just a few hours drive from the City of Angels.

We have two words for you: Big Sur. And we promise it will be the most romantic place you ever go.

Big Sur is is located on an idyllic stretch of Northern California coastline between Carmel and San Simeon. Nestled between the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains and the roaring waves of the Pacific, the best way to get here is by driving Highway 1, a two-lane road widely considered to be one of the most beautiful drives in the world. It is also the longest and most scenic stretch of undeveloped coastline in the US.

The views from Highway 1 – rugged cliffs cutting into the sky and dropping steeply into the blue sea below – usher you into this magical place and you will never want to leave.

Whether you are visiting on a budget and choose camping or a motel, or you go full luxe at what are possibly some of the best resorts in the world, the charm of Big Sur will be all around you through the delicious food, friendly people and amazing wellness activities like hiking and shaman sessions.

The vibe is Big Sur is low key. You can expect to not see anyone for days at a time, even when you are staying at a fully booked hotel. Space and alone time is a critical part of the culture here, so you will never feel crowded or rushed.

There are a number of fantastic restaurants (all dimly lit and boasting fresh California produce) where you and your partner can enjoy romantic meals and delicious local wine. During the day, you’ll want to sleep in (if you’re not watching the sunrise), go on hikes, book spa treatments and explore the stunning local beaches, state parks and waterfalls.

But if there is one thing you need to do in Big Sur, it’s watch the sunset. The sky turns such unbelievable hues of orange and pink that you will be convinced you have reached heaven. And, to reiterate: you will laugh in the face of Paris.
