One of the most charming places in the US, Savannah is a historic small town in Georgia with a dash of big city sophistication. The Ballastone Inn is an elegant bed and breakfast in a townhouse built in 1828 right in Savannah’s Historic Quarter, featuring an antique bar and communal garden courtyard. Head out to pick up pastries and coffee at the Collins Quarter cafe and take an antebellum architecture tour, before strolling through the atmospheric Bonaventure Cemetery, replete with layers of southern moss waving in the breeze about the graves.

3. Soho House, Chicago

Hotel

With a food scene that has grown sophisticated enough to compete with New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, foodies should book a trip to Chicago to brush up on the Midwestern city’s culinary offerings. Stay at trendy Soho House, where the food there is always inventive, local and flavorful, and make sure to check out buzzy new Mexican restaurant Lonesome Rose and Marisol at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, featuring a splendid mural across an entire wall of the private dining room.

5. Liberty Hotel, Boston

Boston is one of the most historic cities in the US but is small enough that a weekend there can afford you the time to see many of the most important attractions. The Liberty Hotel is housed in the former Charles Street Jail built in 1851, with 298 guest rooms arranged around a multistoried atrium. From the Beacon Hill neighbourhood, you can set out to walk the Freedom Trail and visit Faneuil Hall. Don’t forget to have a nightcap at the hotel bar, aptly named Clink.

6. Hotel Bel-Air

Famous for being home to the entertainment industry, Los Angeles is also arguably the most exciting city in the US for contemporary art. The luxury Spanish mission-style Hotel Bel-Air was built in 1946 and features regular exhibitions and 12 acres of hillside with hundreds of trees, plants and a lake, which is home to dozens of swans. From the hotel, head downtown to the Broad museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Moca), before zipping over to the Hauser & Wirth gallery, which has a stellar restaurant in the courtyard.

7. Gramercy Park Hotel, New York City

The Gramercy is sure to titillate with bedrooms and suites furnished in seductive ruby velvets and royal purples. Think sink-into-me feather beds dressed in imported Italian linens, and custom-designed Marshall speakers that you can plug into your phone to play your own nostalgic playlist as you get ready for a romantic night out. Or stay in and dine on classic Roman dishes paired with Italian wines at in-house trattoria Maialino. And after, quaff cocktails at the Rose Bar surrounded by a gallery-worthy art collection and, perhaps, the odd A-lister.

Housed in a late 19th-century brewery, this 146-room retreat by the San Antonio River has an intoxicating charm. Your stay begins with a courtesy La Babia margarita in the library; head to your rustic-chic room to find an icebox stocked with local beers and the ingredients to knock up another marg. If your heads are swimming, you might want to try one of the three hotel restaurants – visit Supper for a sophisticated take on US cuisine or Sternewirth tavern for small plates and more cocktails in an intimate booth.

Korakia is a heady mix of Mediterranean and Moroccan flair under the watchful gaze of the San Jacinto Mountains. A central courtyard is perfumed by citrus, oleander and bougainvillea, while the bungalows and guesthouses sit in two restored historic villas. During the day, feel the Californian sun on your shoulders as you canoodle in a fire pit-lined saltwater pool. And at night, watch the resort come to life as staff light hundreds of candles and lanterns.

Sitting on the edge of Tripp Lake among pine groves, the whitewashed Wolf Cove Inn is a country bolthole away from prying eyes. With just 11 guest rooms, there’s an intimate feel. But for the ultimate romantic getaway, book the Eagle’s Nest Cabin – a rustic lodge with a flickering fireplace, a walk-in shower big enough for two, and bucolic lake views. During the summer, take romantic strolls along the water’s edge. And in the winter, get your heart pumping with a dog-sled tour through the snow-dusted trees
