Whether you like cafe sua da or a cortado, you’re sure to find a cozy space to get your caffeine fix and some Southern hospitality at one of Houston’s great coffee shops. Here are our favorite spots for a strong cup of Joe.
Agora is an artistic coffee shop between Montrose and Rice Village. It’s got European flair and taste, as they serve imported beers, wines and freshly roasted coffee paired with Greek pastries and yogurt. Coffee is unlimited for four dollars, unless you choose a specialty drink like the matcha latte. The hot chocolate here is a good choice if you’re going caffeine-free. Cranberry orange cookies, strawberry kolaches and nut biscotti are among the accompaniments available. However, what really stands out is the decor – wooden floorboards, classical art reproductions and a unique jukebox complete the experience.

The Nook Café
Owned by a Hilton College alumni, The Nook Café is a sophisticated cafe and bar that’s student-friendly in its prices and layout. There are plenty of electrical outlets available and good lighting at study tables, as well as chalkboard walls. Books and board games offer entertainment. The coffee selection is great, too, from the free refills to the s’mores latte and Caphin Vietnamese iced coffee.

Boomtown is a local favorite due to its community presence and quality coffee. You can have your coffee prepared any way you like it, or let the baristas experiment with ingredients. The honey latte is many a coffee lover’s favorite, as is the Mayan Mocha, while shaken iced cappuccinos offer a refreshing treat to alleviate the Houston heat. They also sell packaged coffee from around the world. The cafe’s menu consists of typical coffee house fare – quiche, croissant sandwiches, soup and pastries.

Paper Co Café
This coffee shop‘s only entryway is a blue door behind Ecclesia Church, its parent organization. When this church set out on the philanthropic mission of providing one dollar meals to the homeless, they also created one of the best cafes in Houston. Coffee is bought from independent farmers and roasted on-site, which makes every cup delicious and fresh. Ample seating, natural lighting and a tranquil environment make it a great space for studying or working, while the friendly baristas are always up for a chat. The food is delicious and the menu is always varied and satisfying. Pay the suggested donation for the common meal or leave more money to support others who cannot pay for their meal.

Southside is a cozy but elegant coffee shop, so much so that it has valet parking. The space is tiny and inviting, perfect for studying, meeting up with friends or just hanging out during a cold day. The baristas are knowledgeable about what they serve and creative with their latte art, which often features detailed peacocks, swans, lions, and flora. Their specialty coffees are equally imaginative; try the sweet potato or maple butter lattes as a quirky alternative to plain coffee. The baked goods are also a solid choice, and the tea selection features numerous options.
