Central America’s largest country is home to a wide range of ecosystems and is great to visit throughout the year. But when is the best time to visit Nicaragua?

Think about the seasons

The first thing to consider is the fact that there are two seasons in Nicaragua. The summer, which tends to be dry, runs from December to April, and the winter, when most of the rain falls, lasts from May to November.

Despite the fact that the rainy season covers the summer holidays in the northern hemisphere, the weather means fewer visitors come to Nicaragua during that period. However, you can still have a good time, with less crowds, depending on which part of the country you want to go to.

Regional variations are important

On the Pacific coast, rain generally falls during the afternoon while mornings tend to be dry. On the Atlantic coast, September and October are the height of the stormy season. Hurricanes can be a problem during these months. At the same time, the Atlantic is hot, humid and wet all year round, so you’ll likely see some rain whatever time of year you travel.

In the more mountainous central region, you are likely to see some sporadic rainfall throughout the year. It tends to be cooler here too, thanks to the altitude.

What activities do you want to do?

If you want to go hiking in remote areas, avoid the rainy season. If you’re looking for a beach holiday, avoid the Atlantic during September and October. For general tourism, you can pretty much visit all year round.

Make sure you pack the right stuff according to the weather forecast and you’ll be fine. There is always something to do even if it is raining, so try to remain philosophical. If you’re on a Pacific beach you can still surf in the rain, and there are plenty of indoor activities in the cities.
