Nicaragua is a great place to learn Spanish, with affordable schools all over the country. Here are some of the best options if you are looking to improve your language skills.

Casa Xalteva Education and Cultural Center, Granada

This place first opened in 1995 and it’s been providing intensive Spanish courses ever since. Tuition fees also fund an education shelter for disadvantaged locals. You can get 20 hours one-on-one tuition for $150 per week, and week homestay is an extra $90. Bargain!

Houses in Granada, Nicaragua

La Mariposa, La Concepcion

Set in amazing grounds near the Masaya volcano, this school is only an hour from both Granada and Managua. La Mariposa also boasts an animal rescue project and an eco-hotel in addition to the Spanish school. It’s a great spot and a bargain at $300 for 20 hours tuition, private en-suite room, three meals per day and all activities.

Laguna de Apoyo in Masaya, Nicaragua

Apoyo Nicaragua Intensive Spanish Language School, Apoyo

Nature lovers will enjoy this school in a lakeside lodge in Apoyo, a crater lake an hour from Managua. Learn Spanish in the mornings and then enjoy the lake and the surrounding area in the afternoon. Check the website for more information.

Colibri Spanish School, Matagalpa

Combine Spanish lessons with cultural tours in the north of Nicaragua for $298 per week. Make your own schedule, translate documents in exchange for lessons, or sign up to a work exchange and teach English to locals.

Sunset in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur Spanish School, San Juan del Sur

This surf town has turned into one of the most important backpacker magnets in Nicaragua. As such it might not be the best place for full immersion in Nicaraguan culture, but if you want to surf and be on the beach it’s a good option.

Hijos del Maíz Escuela de Español Campesina, near Esteli

Head off into the countryside to learn Spanish with coffee farmers in the remote village of El Lagortillo. It’s a unique experience and the location means that there will be fewer distractions than in destinations such as San Juan del Sur.

Metropolis Spanish School, Leon

The cultural hub of Leon is a great place to learn Spanish, with a laid back atmosphere and plenty of young people to practise with outside class. Lessons and homestay packages can be had for $250 per week, plus you’ve got a wonderful city to explore.
