What to Do on a Rainy Day in Antigua, Guatemala
The colonial city of Antigua is a great place for wandering aimlessly through the cobbled streets. But what can you do during the wet season without getting soaked to the skin? Read on for our top rainy day recommendations.
Visit Nim Pot
This huge shop is a cavernous space that’s more like a warehouse than a shop. Inside, you’ll find handicrafts from across Guatemala, including textiles, masks and trinkets. It’s a one-stop shop for souvenirs, and you can get everything you need on a rainy afternoon.
Find out about Mayan music
Hop in a tuktuk to Casa K’ojom, a small museum on the outskirts of Antigua with an impressive collection of musical artefacts. Here, you can learn a great deal about Mayan music and instruments, thanks to their fantastic multimedia archives.
Walk through Guatemalan history
One of the most famous hotels in Antigua, Casa Santo Domingo, also houses an impressive museum. There are exhibits from the pre-Columbian period, the Classic Period of Mayan culture and the colonial period. Make sure to check out the silver exhibits, and don’t forget the ruins in the grounds outside, either.
Go to the ChocoMuseo
Sign up to a chocolate-making workshop and make your own souvenirs to take home over the course of a half-day. You are free to take away whatever you make (if you don’t eat it straight away, that is), and you can buy more chocolate from the onsite shop.
Take a yoga class
There are lots of places to do yoga in Antigua, and it can be a great way to relax as the rain falls. Check out the listings for classes at Meson Panza Verde, a boutique hotel on the edge of town, or Casa San Juan, a retreat a few minutes’ drive away from Antigua.
Go for a drink
With a bar on almost every corner, there are few places better than Antigua for daytime drinking. Top choices include The Londoner, The Snug and Café No Se, and there is often live music in all of them.
Head to a spa
Relax away from the rain with a massage at Shen, Healing Hands or one of the many other spas in Antigua. You’ll forget all about the weather as you enjoy a soothing treatment.
