San Martin

Coffee enthusiasts and pastry fiends, follow the smell of baked bread to San Martin, a lovely restaurant-cum-bakery that has a healthy and delicious menu. The selection of freshly baked pastries, baguettes and tarts will leave you drooling, but if you’re looking for something more substantial there’s also a tasty array of bigger dishes. The huevos florentinos – a bread bun stuffed with eggs, spinach and a creamy mushroom sauce – is especially popular, but also available for brunch are sandwiches, soups, burgers and rustic pizzas baked in stone ovens. The coffee bar serves some of the best beans in the city, and the bakery is ideal for picking up a snack for later, too.

1. The Market

On the more upscale end there’s The Market, located in the swish InterContinental hotel. Known as the best buffet breakfast spot in the city, The Market offers visitors a dizzying array of dishes; from local delights like pupusas and frijoles volteados to international treats like pancakes and waffles and healthier options like fruit and yogurt, there’s something for every palate here. Service is excellent (your coffee cup will always be full) and the chefs will happily whip up an omelet made to order for you. Stylish and contemporary, The Market is a great place to enjoy a leisurely late breakfast.

2. Cafe Vienes

Cafe, Healthy, Pastries, Dessert

Located inside Westin Camino Real in Guatemala City’s Zone 10, this lovely cafe is an ideal spot for a quiet brunch. The breakfast menu is packed with delicious healthy choices like overnight bircher muesli and fruit, although if you’re looking for something more decadent you’re in luck. The extensive rage of cakes, pastries and desserts draw visitors from across the city, and paired with one of Cafe Vienes’ outstanding coffees, is the perfect end to a relaxing brunch. The service is impeccable and the sandwiches are another must-try.

3. Saul Bistro Guatemala

Bistro, Restaurant, Contemporary, European, Vegetarian

Also serving up a delicious breakfast (until noon on weekends), Saul Bistro Guatemala is the place to refuel after a lie-in. Enormous windows looking right onto the street make this a great spot for some people-watching – take a seat at one of the booths and watch the world go by. Saul Bistro Guatemala is as famous for its healthy juices and smoothies as it is for its not-so-healthy crepes – the nutella and mascarpone crepe with strawberries is a firm customer favourite. Local breakfasts, like the estrellados crocantes (fried eggs over corn tortillas with black beans and plantains) are very good, but you can also choose from a wide range of other egg dishes, pancakes and waffles if you prefer.

4. El Mercadito de Lola

Cafe, Restaurant, Vegetarian

For something a bit more alternative, head to El Mercadito de Lola, a cool cafe with its own health food store. With a focus on natural products and sustainability, you can find all manner of healthy and organic delights on the shelf, but the restaurant also delivers. Choose from filling sandwiches and baguettes, nutritious juices and egg dishes: the omelet with turkey and chaya (a spinach-like leaf) in a chilli sauce is one of the most popular dishes. The coffee is excellent, but be sure to arrive before 11 am if you want the breakfast menu rather than lunch.
