10 Mexican Photographers To Watch Out For

Diego Huerta was recently featured in a Remezcla article as a result of his spectacular portraits of indigenous communities in Oaxaca. These photos, which can be seen on both his website and Instagram, are predominantly of Tehuanas from the Istmo de Tehuantepec. However, Huerta also focuses on other Oaxacan and Mexican communities, such as Huichols from the Wirikuta mountain range in Jalisco.

Jorge Barreda defines himself as a visual artist that uses photography as his main tool, and he’s definitely one to watch out for. With upcoming projects inspired by Hayao Miyazaki’s films, he seeks to tell stories through his captivating work, and this is apparent in the surreal images that make up his Freedom series. Photos in this series feature models posed in front of exquisite natural backdrops and the colors Barreda hones in on are truly enchanting.

Self-described as ‘a person who does things’, it seems somewhat of an understatement; Maria Fernanda Molins’ photographs have been featured in Rookie, positioning her as an excellent up-and-coming fashion photographer that is making waves in the industry. What’s more, her two Tumblr blogs are littered with vintage, youthful and intimate images of both people and landscapes, more of which are available on her Instagram.

Mexican-born but now based out of the fashion capital of the world, Paris, Alejandra Cervera Hauser is an accomplished fashion photographer that will surely continue to make her mark on the most notoriously fickle of industries. While she’s been featured in Vogue, Meow and Condé Nast Traveler, her Instagram is where it’s at in terms of vibrant shots of cityscapes and French graffiti that will give you massive life and travel envy.

The youngest Mexican photographer featured on our list (Mazatlán-native Joaquín Castillo is a mere 18 years old) undoubtedly has a bright and prosperous photography future ahead of him. As with the previous two entries, he also centers himself around fashion photography and loves to share the story, not just the superficiality, of fashion through his work. Spontaneous and in possession of apparently boundless enthusiasm, Castillo is one to watch.

Fascinating subject matter is what helps Luis Arturo Aguirre stand out from the crowd. Recently, he has generated an impressive number of column inches for his Desvestidas project, which depicts often topless transvestites wearing wigs and full make-up against bright and block-colored backgrounds. Perhaps better known than some featured, he’s considered one of Latin America’s rising photography stars, and undeniably one of the most revolutionary Mexican photographers at the moment.

Cecy Young brings us back to fashion photography. Considered the most well-known Mexican fashion photographer, her distinct style is delicate and simple and is full of clean outlines and silhouettes. She moved to Paris after making a name for herself and now works for a wide range of publications, such as Marie Claire, i-D and Elle México. An impressive collection of her images can be seen on both her website and Instagram.

With an impressive back catalogue of six photo series’ to his name, José Luis Cuevas is an accomplished and intriguing example of a Mexican photographer you should continue to follow. His latest project is titled Notes For a Human Resistance Test, and uncomfortably juxtaposes intimate portraits with industrial scenes and even weapons. As a portrait, travel and fashion photographer, it seems like Dorian Ulises López can do it all, and this assertion wouldn’t be too far off the mark. With an interesting focus on the ideals surrounding the physical form that exists in contemporary Mexican society, it’s unsurprising to find out he once worked as the editor for both Life and Style and ELLE México before deciding to commit fully to photography. The work he showcases on Instagram is honestly impressive.

Known simply as Mr. Marcovich, our final Mexican photographer to watch out for also goes by Marco Antonio and can be found showing off his images on Instagram. Having worked as a photographer for almost ten years, he too has a particular interest in fashion portraits and his work is especially influenced by cinema and literature.
