The Bahamas comprises over 700 islands and, naturally, much of the land is made up of coastal areas. Many towns have been built near the ocean to make use of their natural resources, such as the fish, the waves, the cool ocean breeze, the stunning underwater marine life, and much more. Here’s our guide to the best seaside towns in the Bahamas, and the unique activities each one has to offer.

Nassau, New Providence

Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas, found on New Providence Island. New Providence is a 34-kilometre (21-mile) long island with a diverse culture – a mixture of West African, English and Haitian. Nassau is also the most populated and developed island, with over half of the country’s population living here. Here you will have the opportunity to chose from a number of luxury hotels, do a variety of water sports, such as snorkeling and jet skiing, and have an array of restaurants and museums to visit.

Paradise Island, New Providence

Paradise Island is an island connected to New Providence by a bridge. Visitors can enjoy the white sand beaches, water sports opportunities, and a selection of accommodations, all within a very small radius. Here you will find a variety of tourist attractions and some of the country’s best resorts, restaurants, shopping stores, and nightclubs.

Arawak Cay, New Providence

Fish Fry, Arawak Cay is a group of over 30 seafood restaurants that create a small town. Here you can get authentic Bahamian food, such as conch salad, conch fritters, fried grouper, snapper and much more. Arawak Cay also hosts cultural events, such as live concerts, parades and festivals.

Freeport, Grand Bahama

Freeport is the capital of the island Grand Bahama. Here you can find every activity a visitor to the Bahamas could hope for: beautiful beaches, golf, water sports, diving, gambling, duty-free shopping, boating, nightclubs, fishing and more. In fact, Grand Bahama is considered the game fishing capital of the Bahamas, and here you can find marlin, bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, barracuda and more.

Alice Town, Bimini

Alice Town is located on the island of Bimini and is known for its beach, which stretches for miles. It is known to be extremely quiet, making it great for long walks or seaside reading. It also has several areas ideal for sunbathing and an array of bars and fast food restaurants.

Gregory Town, Eleuthera

Gregory Town is a small town found on the island of Eleuthera, and it’s great for those who want to experience Bahamian culture. They have an annual Pineapple Festival held on the Thursday afternoon of Bahamian Labor Day weekend, in early June. Local musicians play “Rake n Scrape”, a local type of music, on Friday nights at a roadside barbecue and, during the colder months, winter waves attract surfers from all over the world to this small community. North of Gregory Town is the country’s famous Glass Window Bridge and Preacher’s Cave, the landing site of the earliest settlers of the Bahamas, the Eleutheran Adventurers.
