With a handful of highly-rated Mexican restaurants, the old-time favorite, the fish taco, can be found at a number of places across Toronto. Check this list for where to find the best in town.

Gourmet Gringos, The Beaches (East Side)

Probably the most underrated fast food joint in the beaches, there are few words to describe how good the fish tacos are from Gourmet Gringos. Their authenticity and combination of perfect texture and flavor make them tough to beat. Gourmet Gringos was started by two best friends who saw an opportunity to offer fresh, local, and authentic Mexican food in the Toronto area.

Local, Liberty Village

Local is one of the busiest restaurants on the west side of downtown Toronto. They focus on handmade burgers, buns, sauces, craft beer, and a brilliant atmosphere. They offer both fried chicken and battered fish tacos served smothered in their house-made garlic aioli and topped with fresh pico de gallo. They also serve guacamole made-to-order on your table, which is perfect to top off your fish tacos.

Wilbur, King West

Wilbur may be the new kid on the block, but they really strive to cater to the King West lifestyle of ‘fast and casual.’ Their dishes consist mostly of Mexican-style street food like the Cali burrito, street corn, shrimp and ‘shrooms quesadillas, and of course, a handful of $3.75 tacos, all served with house-made chips and your choice of eight different condiments and salsas. Their fish taco is by far the best thing on the menu. Try the beer-battered mahi-mahi topped with cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle crema, and your choice of hot sauce, salsa, or guacamole for a little extra kick.

Seven Lives, Kensington Market

Restaurant, Mexican

Expect the unexpected when entering the Kensington Market food scene. You’ll be sure to find a few gems, including some of the best fish tacos in Toronto at Seven Lives, the walk-up, cash-only taco bar whose daily menu can be found on either their twitter feed or on an unassuming chalkboard inside. The menu items range from steak, octopus, and ceviche tostadas, mahi mahi tacos, and daily features.

La Carnita, Leslieville

Don’t get discouraged by La Carnita‘s loud music or the super stylish bartender. Infamous for their hip-hop playlists, seasonal paletas, and weekly features that are sure to entice you to return week after week, this new Leslieville location stepped it up with some twists on their original menu items. Replacing their original fish taco ‘In Code We Trust,’ their Friday feature is now the Big Sur taco. Made with crispy, corn-battered bass, topped with watermelon radish, blackened chili hot sauce, and mayo, it’s almost too pretty to eat.

Grand Electric

Grand Electric, has one of the best fish tacos in town; housemade tortillas, beer battered white fish, spicy crema and a crispy slaw. It’s packed with flavour, the fish crispy on the outside, and soft in the inside; other options include vegetarian, like the crispy cauliflower, arbol chicken and pork tinga. The music is pumping, the vibe casual and the line is always long, so be sure to get there early and get a seat on the patio.
