Sidewalk Citizen
Located riverside in Calgary’s East Village, this artisanal bakery has a well-earned reputation for slinging top-notch bread, pastries and other carb-alicious grub. But hungover patrons, beware: you’ve got to get there early – or at least before mid-afternoon when it closes. If you’re looking to supplement your brekkie with some protein, try the Sidewalk Citizen Quiche slices or the salmon toast. Hot sandwiches, such as the tuna sourdough, are also a worthy choice and best enjoyed watching the Bow River stream past. Recommended by local insider Stuart Forster
Prairie Mill Bread Co.
Every day, this bakery puffs up fresh, organic bread sourced from (presumably polite) Canadian wheat. It’s a tough place to get bored of, as, Monday to Friday, patrons are also treated to daily specials. You’ve got your staples such as tangy sourdough and nutty spelt loaves, but the true gems are the sweet treats. Try the apple crunch, and see if you disagree. Earth’s Oven
We know a lot more about nutrition today than we did just a few decades ago. Many of us have discovered that we’re allergic to gluten – or that it simply doesn’t agree with us. If this sounds like you, and you find yourself in Calgary with a hankering for some breaded goodness, then head over to Earth’s Oven. The owner here has actually spent 15 years learning and perfecting gluten-free recipes. From gluten-free burgers to naan bread, nearly every cuisine on Earth is covered. Glamorgan Bakery Ltd.
Glamorgan doesn’t have the sleek, modern appearance of many trendy bakeries, but this wholesome local eatery doesn’t need to be hip. Patrons come here for Dutch-inspired cakes, bread, pies, rolls, small desserts and more. But, if you’ve only got room in your tummy for one morsel, try the cheese bun. Pro tip: microwave it for 10 seconds for gooey eating. Recommended by local insider Coco Hiu Tung
