A county filled with traditional market towns, Yorkshire is well known for its many markets. From foodie extravaganzas to vintage fairs and weekly events, this is the place to head if you love nothing better than browsing interesting markets. You’ll find market stalls all across the region, but here are a selection of our favourites including both local and farmers markets.

Barnsley Market

Market, European

One of the oldest markets in Yorkshire, Barnsley market is over 700 years old. Consisting of both an indoor and an outdoor market, there are approximately 300 stalls to browse, including food, flowers and fashion. In addition, there are a variety of specialist food, craft and gardening markets that spring up around the town centre.

Opening hours: Mon-Wed, 8:30AM – 4:30PM. Fri&Sat, 8:30AM – 4:30PM. Closed Thursday & Sunday.

Kirkby Lonsdale Farmers Market

Market, European, Fusion

One of the best and most varied farmer’s markets in Yorkshire, you’ll find everything from local gin to the infamous Grasmere gingerbread at Kirkby Lonsdale’s monthly farmers market. All the food and drink on offer at the market has been grown, baked, brewed or caught by the sellers themselves, providing a local fusion of seasonal specialities.

Opening hours: First Thursday of every month.

Doncaster Market

Monday – Saturday

One of the largest and oldest traditional markets in Yorkshire, Doncaster market has been beloved of locals for hundreds of years. The market space is huge, taking up a quarter of the entire pedestrianised town centre and including four indoor market halls. The full market occurs on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays with an outdoor antique market every Wednesday and a reduced number of food stalls every Monday and Thursday.

Opening hours: Mon-Wed, 7AM – 8PM. Fri&Sat, 7AM – 8PM. Closed Thursday & Sunday.

Leeds Kirkgate Market

Market, European

It is worth visiting Kirkgate market just to admire the beautiful Victorian market hall in which it is held. One of largest indoor markets in the whole of Europe, expect to find everything from speciality food and drink to flowers, fashion and hardware – although it’s the gourmet ingredients on offer on the food stands that really draw in the crowds. Seek out such delicacies as crab claws or aromatic spices to take home to cook up a storm.

Opening hours: Mon-Sat, 8AM – 5PM. Closed Sunday.

Malton Monthly Food Markets

Market

Known as the ‘Food Capital of Yorkshire’, Malton’s monthly food markets draw in huge crowds with the temptation of fresh local produce and live cooking demonstrations. Local foodies flock here on the second Saturday of each month to shop for flavoursome ingredients and sample some of the local delicacies on offer.

Opening hours: Second Saturday of each month. .

Skipton Market

Market, European

One of the most well-known market towns in Yorkshire, Skipton’s market is one of the most varied in the county. Open four days a week and located just down the high street from the impressive castle, the markets boasts a wide variety of produce including everything from fresh food to rolls of material, colourful flowers and DVDs. Traders change on a daily basis with Monday hosting a smaller market.

Opening hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday.
