Uzhhorod is a city with a lot of attractions. There are ancient castles, funny miniature sculptures and amazing churches that come together to form a unique architectural ensemble. Yet, while you’re rushing around trying to see everything, don’t forget to drop by the local cafés for some good coffee, Galician and Ukrainian cuisine and an inviting atmosphere.

Eat Me! Café is an unusual venue for Uzhhorod, as it is stylized like an American café from the 1950s. Here, you can try popular American dishes like burgers, sandwiches, and muffins or drink a cup of coffee or a milkshake. Waffles are definitely a must-try, as Eat Me! Café has a rich variety of them: chicken and caramelized onion waffles, avocado and bacon, mozzarella and tomatoes and much more. In addition to American cuisine, the café also offers Galician coffee (Galicia is a region in western Ukraine), brewed in a Moka pot.

The complicated name, at first sight, is written in the local dialect, translating into a ‘shot at the notary’ – the venue occupies a notary’s house, built in 1940. The menu offers different types of salo (pork fat), meat and fish dishes, Ukrainian vegetable stew and delicacies of the Transcarpathian region.

Under the Castle

Under the Castle is a café situated down the street from the city’s major attraction – Uzhhorod Castle. It is another spot that shares local traditions and the unique character of Western Ukraine, and Uzhhorod in particular. The interior is decorated in a retro style, with old tools and household items all over the room. As for the cuisine, Under the Castle treats guests to proper Ukrainian dishes, sandwiches, tea, coffee and local beer.

Duffort

Coffee lovers will be delighted with Duffort’s espresso bar. The coffee shop can be found in a cosy central courtyard in Uzhhorod. It is a stylish venue with colourful furniture and comfy hammocks. The minimalistic outdoor area brightly contrasts with the historical building on L’va Tolstoho Street. But the main highlight is their fresh and fragrant coffee, which is considered to be the best in the city. In addition, you can come to Duffort for a snack or a sweet treat for a little energy boost.

The spacious interior with wooden furniture and a lot of green plants constitutes a perfect place for a morning cup of coffee and a little work on the laptop. As a snack, you can choose something from the list of desserts: cookies, cakes or yoghurt with granola.

The homely ambience, friendly staff and freshly ground coffee beans, brought here from Italy, make Goriziana Caffé one of the most visited spots in the city. There are delicious cakes and pastries, but special attention should be paid to the Galician speciality kiflyk (a handmade puff pastry cookie), which makes the coffee taste even better. In addition, Goriziana Caffé has a store where you can by the coffee beans you liked the most.
