The Alpine ski resort of Davos is known for its famous clientele, luxurious hotels and equally opulent restaurants. It’s also home to the World Economic Forum, usually held every January. It’s not cheap – this is Switzerland after all – but there is an abundance of ski terrain to explore. Hotel Seehof Davos

Next to the Parsenn Cable Car and right on the Promenade, you’ll find the five-star Hotel Seehof. Dating back to 1869, the hotel has spacious, opulent rooms and several restaurants, including the winter-only Fondue Stübli. Seminar rooms at the hotel are regularly used during the World Economic Forum. Angela Merkel, Vladimir Putin, Bill Clinton and more have all walked through its doors.

Hotel Waldhuus isn’t a small place, with 93 modern rooms and suites, but it is incredibly cosy. Warm lightning, deep mattresses and wooden furnishings in the bedrooms take care of that. Local wood is used throughout the chalet-style construction. There’s a 700sqm (7,535sqft) wellness area and a shuttle bus to the Parsenn and Jakobshorn ski areas. Dine on the four-course Steinbock menu and drink at the Matta Bar in front of a crackling fire.

On the Promenade, near the Schatzalpbahn funicular, the Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère offers rooms ranging from 27sqm (290sqft) to a luxurious suite sized at 68sqm (732sqft). A short drive from Davos you’ll find the Walserhuus, a family-friendly, old-fashioned mountain home in the Sertig Valley. The rooms are built with local fir wood and the whole building is quaint and traditional (with the welcome addition of a hot tub). There are several in-house dining options – their Davos fondue made with local cheese is particularly special.

Hotel Piz Buin Klosters is a short walk to the Parsenn cable car and backs directly onto the Landquart River. There are 53 rooms which are amongst the largest in the Davos region, combining modern design and natural wood to create a tasteful aesthetic. Down in Grizzly’s bar, you’ll find a huge piano and an upbeat atmosphere, with live music every Friday and Saturday from 9pm.

In the quiet but central Horlauben residential area, you’ll find Hotel Casanna. The three-star hotel is run by Davos hotelier Philippe Rusch. It’s all about authentic alpine charm and a personal touch here. There are 26 rooms, simple but comfy. When it’s time to dine, you’ll find Mr Rusch is the chef in the kitchen too – where he cooks up four-course dinners, and local delights. Edelweiss Hotel is a small, family-run hotel known for its great service and high standards. The decor is cosily modern, contrasting heavy wood with clean lines and subdued colours. The rooms are clean and comfortable, while the staff are incredibly warm and helpful. Turmhotel Victoria is a quaint establishment with old European styling, straight out of a fairytale. Tucked away up in the mountains, this dreamy little place may be one of the last original Swiss chalets, though its interior has been significantly modernised to provide maximum comfort to its patrons. The rooms are all crisp white walls and linens balanced by rustic wooden furniture and tasteful artwork. It is excellently situated right by the railway station and the Parsenne slopes, and the friendly staff serve an extensive complimentary breakfast to energise you for a full day on the slopes.
