Located not far from the provincial capital Barcelona, the small town of Vilafranca del Penedès is famous for being the centre of the Cava wine-making industry. Home to some of the most prestigious local wineries, the town is also popular for its outdoor market on Saturdays and its charming old town plazas. The En Rima Culinary Space is a gourmet restaurant which attracts both hotel guests and those from outside with its gastronomic tasting menu which changes on a monthly basis.

An old rural house renovated to offer comfortable rooms with plenty of natural light and comfortable beds, the Cal Ruget Hotel is located in the small hamlet of La Rovira Roja inland from Vilafranca del Penedès. Many of the rooms boats stylish wood floors and all of them offer splendid views of either the nearby mountains, the vineyards or the garden. The hotel restaurant offers seasonal dishes made with ingredients mostly sourced within 100km (62 miles) of the property and mostly from organic producers. During the winter, the calçot menu – a special type of sweet onion which is adored by locals – is both reasonably priced and good fun.

Surrounded by fragrant fig trees and date palms, the Masia Sumidors is a traditional Catalan rural house or ‘masia’ furnished with an eclectic mix of traditional furniture and quirky modern additions. Tucked away on a sunny hillside, the hotel has an outdoor pool and in the summer dinner is served on the outdoor terrace overlooking the garden. Rooms are a far cry from your standard chain hotel, each boasting their own unique décor with furniture by local company Valentí. The owners are also happy to organise wine tours of the local estates and recommend local wineries and restaurants.
