There’s a lot to do and see on a trip to Toledo, a stunning medieval town just a short trip from Madrid by train. But don’t forget to leave time during your visit to simply linger over coffee on a pretty square or terrace, soaking up the atmosphere with the locals. Here’s our pick of the very best places to do just that.

Biblioteca del Alcázar

One of the most famous sights in Toledo is the majestic Alcázar, a 16th-century palace loved for its incredible history and panoramic views over the city. But not everyone knows that there’s a great – not to mention very affordable – café tucked away on the top floor. Give your feet a break from all that sightseeing and enjoy a coffee and a snack in one of the most beautiful buildings in town.

Trébedes Café

This friendly local spot is one of the most popular places in Toledo for breakfast. Don’t miss their strong coffee and freshly grated tomato on toast, a Spanish breakfast staple. It’s a good bet for lunch, too, with a simple but good menu of sandwiches, burgers and salads.

Café Del Fin

Another fabulous Old Town cafe worth a visit is the chic Café Del Fin. Both the décor and the menu are modern and elegant, with plenty of options available for breakfast, lunch or just an afternoon snack in between sightseeing stops. Try their indulgent homemade churros with fresh cheese.

El Parador

Famous for its incredible views, hilltop hotel Parador has a stunning café terrace open to non-guests. It’s an elegant spot well worth a visit for the view alone, which you can enjoy with a morning coffee or a full breakfast buffet.

Cafeteria La Pepa

Quirky yet sophisticated, this café-bar is decked out in bright colours and filled with vintage knick-knacks. It’s loved locally for its Nespresso coffee and elaborate food menu – particularly the indulgent brunch plates – with lots of healthy options to choose from.
