If immersing yourself in a new culture is top of your list for 2019, then Seville could just be the destination you’re looking for. To help you discover what it has to offer, Culture Trip has teamed up with the British Airways American Express® Credit Card to explore the Andalusian capital, from sailing down the Guadalquivir or perusing buildings decorated with exquisite azulejos to delighting in tapas and soaking up some Vitamin D. What’s more, we’ll show you how your everyday spending can help you collect Avios to jet off sooner.

Enjoy unforgettable views at the Metropol Parasol

In Plaza de la Encarnación you’ll find the Metropol Parasol, which at 85 feet (30 metres) tall claims to be the world’s largest wooden structure. Because of its cream-coloured exterior, rounded canopies and stalk-like supports, you’ll most likely hear locals referring to the construction as ‘las Setas’ (the mushrooms), but it was actually inspired by Seville Cathedral’s vaults. Wander its winding, open-air walkways, and you’ll catch some of the finest views in the city. Before heading back to ground level, enjoy views from the rooftop bar and a glass of ice-cold sangria if it takes your fancy.

Learn about azulejos at Centro Cerámica Triana

Both Spain and Portugal are famed for their striking azulejos (ceramic tiles), but it was in Seville that they were first introduced by the Moors in the Middle Ages. The city is home to numerous shops selling azulejos adorned with old Arabic designs, the best of which are hand-cut and hand-painted. Head from the centre of town and across the river to Centro Cerámica Triana if you’re interested in learning more.

Experience authentic flamenco at Tablao Flamenco Los Gallos

Dedicate at least one night of your trip to experiencing the art of flamenco, southern Spain’s distinctive style of dance and music. Bag a seat at the Tablao Flamenco Los Gallos (an easy amble from the Royal Alcázar), which first opened in the ’60s and has been showcasing some of Seville’s best live flamenco performances ever since.

Cruise the River Guadalquivir

Running along the west side of Seville, the River Guadalquivir has been a thoroughfare for battle, trade and travel, and even saw the return of the first-ever ship to successfully sail around the world in 1522. While there’s no doubt the waters are less turbulent these days, you can still jump aboard an open-top cruiser for a guided tour of the riverside sights, including the military watchtower, the Torre del Oro. You may spot some intrepid canoers and paddleboarders floating past on your journey, too.

Try tapas at La Azotea

Restaurant, Tapas

You haven’t done Seville properly if you don’t devour a plate (or 10) of tapas in La Azotea. Try the seasonal fare, including locally sourced seafood, meats and vegetables, amid the restaurant’s contemporary setting, not to mention an exquisite wine list that’s sure to get the taste buds tingling.
