In keeping with the timeless tranquility, things have been kept distinctly on the more rustic side of rustic-chic. There’s a secluded pool for summer swims, surrounded by pretty gardens patrolled by wild tortoises. An emphasis on traditional local gastronomy extends from breakfast through to dinner. The hotel will also rustle up picnics stuffed with local delicacies for day-tripping – the pretty Cala Alcaufar Beach is less than a 30-minute walk away.

Built by the Albertí family in 1740, the great-grandfather’s coat of arms still adorns the elegant peach façade of Casa Albertí. Fontenille Menorca is the collective name for two distinctive hotels set in the rural south of the island. One is Santa Ponsa, a colonial-style 17th-century palace set in landscaped Moorish gardens. Torre Vella is a whitewashed former farmstead with a watchtower, set in extensive grounds, where animals wander among fruit trees and vegetable gardens. Think bougainvillea climbing whitewashed stone walls, secluded gardens brimming with well-tended plant life and absolute peace and tranquillity. While, from the outside, this six-room boutique hotel in Menorca looks like any other traditional townhouse, the inside tells a different story. Opened in 2017, swish airy design takes the fore, with crisp 21st-century minimalism and modern artwork creating a bright and contemporary feel throughout. Original 19th-century detailing remains in the form of patterned tiling and wood-beamed ceilings. Don’t expect much in the way of facilities, but an excellent breakfast, hip and spacious rooms and super-friendly staff complete an outstanding little property. It’s also just steps from the cobbled streets of Cuitadella’s gorgeous old town centre.

15. Ses Sucreres

Tucked down a cobbled street in the sleepy town of Ferreries is this tiny gem of a hotel. An unassuming whitewashed façade is typical of its residential surrounds, but, inside, there is a fabulously quirky combination of vintage furniture, original artworks and 19th-century architectural features. Six bright and spacious guest rooms are simply and individually styled, with the odd hip, retro piece or splash of coloured fabrics against white plaster walls. Since opening in 2010, it’s also been a hub for local culture, hosting regular exhibitions and small plays.
