Madrid is a great city for food, with its tapas bars, old taverns, creative restaurants and a huge variety of international offerings. It is also home to some excellent gourmet food shops, where you can pick up quality products to take home, or enjoy in the city’s parks as part of a picnic.

1. Casa González

Deli, Restaurant, Bar, Spanish

This wonderful deli in Madrid’s literary neighbourhood of Las Letras is a perfect place to peruse some quality Spanish produce. Its counters are packed with jamón Ibérico, cold cuts, sausages and a range of cheeses, while its walls are lined with dozens of bottles of wine, with brands from smaller producers across Spain. Buy produce to take away, or sit inside (grab the window seat if you can) for a leisurely glass of wine and a taste of some of Madrid’s finest products.

2. Quesería Cultivo

Farm Shop, Spanish

Cheese-lovers will adore this artisan cheese shop, in the cool Conde Duque neighbourhood, just north of Gran Vía. It is run by a group of cheese-making families, who offer an extensive range of products from around Spain. Check their website for regular tastings and offers, like Cheese of the Month.

3. Corte Inglés Gourmet Experience Gran Vía

The top floor of Spain’s main department store is dedicated to gourmet produce from both around the country and further afield – from wine and spirits to typical Spanish products like olive oil, saffron and jamón. There is also a range of restaurant stalls, from burgers and Mexican food to tapas and cheese, where you can buy food to eat outside on the Gourmet Experience’s terrace.

4. Poncelet Punto Selecto Quesos

Shop

A few streets away from the cheese bar of the same name, Poncelet Punto Selecto Quesos is a haven of cheese that stocks varieties from all over the world. Search cheeses by country, animal, intensity and maturation. Its gourmet cheese baskets make lovely presents. A great place to stock up on cheesy accessories, pick up cheese boards, knives, and fondue and raclette sets.

5. Mantequerías Bravo

Shop

Mantequerías Bravo began as a grocery store in 1931 and these days specialises in wine, as well as gourmet products like ham, olive oil and coffee. Located in the high-end neighbourhood of Salamanca, the shop harkens back to a different era and, for a vintage shopping experience, is hard to beat.

6. Alma de Julián Becerro

Shop

Among the tapas bars on Cava Baja, La Latina’s famous tapas street, Alma de Julián Becerro is a shop packed with all kinds of ham. The Becerro family has been rearing acorn-fed Iberian pigs since 1930, making the most melt-in-the-mouth jamón Ibérico de Bellota, Spain’s best-quality ham. It is still produced in La Alberca, in the province of Salamanca, and makes a great present to take home from Spain.

7. Petra Mora

Shop

Last but not least, this online gourmet market gives you a taste of Spain, no matter where you are in the world. Run by María and Uxía Domínguez (the sisters behind the cool Spanish clothing brand Bimba y Lola) design plays a part at Petra Mora as well. Vintage packaging makes every product, from conserves to olive oil, meat and cheeses, a tempting treat.
