In recent years, the trend for eco-friendly design and sustainable practices has established itself as the new norm as travellers have become increasingly aware of the environmental costs of travel. Given the status of Barcelona as one of the premier smart cities in Europe and a hub for new technologies, it’s no surprise there are plenty of green options to choose from. Here’s our pick of some of the best eco hotels in Barcelona – now bookable with Culture Trip.

1. Casa Camper

Located in the heart of the Raval neighbourhood, just a minute away from the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), the Casa Camper is a modern hotel with a stylish, minimalist feel. Keen to reduce its impact on the local environment, the hotel is equipped with a water recycling system that cleans shower water through a biomechanical system, producing water that is reused in the toilet. Water consumption is lowered by up to 50 per cent, contributing to the conservation of the precious natural resource.

2. Twentytú Hostel

If you’re willing to share a room, then the Twentytú Hostel is probably the greenest place you could stay in Barcelona. A pioneer in the area of green technology applied to the hospitality industry, the hostel has been awarded numerous prizes and accreditations for its sustainable measures, which include greywater recovery, pneumatic waste collection and the use of Smartwatt devices to reduce energy consumption.

3. Hotel Andante

This low-cost hotel is proof that sustainability can go hand in hand with affordability to offer eco-friendly accommodation to suit all budgets. The Hotel Andante is signed up to the Biosphere Responsible Tourism charter and follows a number of measures to reduce its impact on the environment, including using solar panels for energy and sourcing plant varieties that require minimal watering, as well as LED lighting to keep energy consumption down.

4. Mas Salagros EcoResort

Although not technically located within the city of Barcelona, this pioneering eco-resort in Catalunya is close enough that it is definitely worth mentioning. The number of measures in place at Mas Salagros makes it easy to see why this hotel has earned the label of 100 per cent eco-friendly: from using locally produced bio-fuels to recycling rainwater, even the beds and mattresses have been made using natural materials and sustainably sourced wood. There’s even a farm onsite that provides some of the produce for the two in-house restaurants.

5. Hotel Neri

Located in the charming backstreets of the Gothic Quarter, this romantic boutique hotel is a member of the Relais & Château association of some of the most prestigious hotels in the world. Not your traditional “green hotel”, Hotel Neri is, however, committed to sustainable practices in many areas: from using only natural materials in its rooms to managing energy and water consumption.

This modern three-star hotel is located in the trendy El Born district of Barcelona and offers a range of different rooms – from the affordable Tiny Room to the more luxurious Junior Suite. The hotel has been awarded Class A building certification for its thermal insulation system, smart climate-control system and highly efficient lighting and machinery. Hotel Yurbban is also a member of the Barcelona Sustainable Tourism Association, which seeks to promote sustainable tourism in the city.

7. Sixtytwo Hotel

This modern urban hotel is located on the city’s famous Passeig de Gracià – Barcelona’s answer to the Champs-Élysées – and offers great access to the designer stores and boutiques in the area, as well as the masterpieces of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The Sixtytwo Hotel is committed to providing its guests with a menu of dishes prepared using KM0 products, meaning products that are produced within 100km (62mi) of the hotel itself. Given the richness of choice offered by Catalonian farms and wineries, there’s plenty to choose from.

8. Hostal Grau

This eco-friendly hotel offers its guests the opportunity to “sleep green in Barcelona”, thanks to its carefully designed rooms, furnished using sustainably sourced materials – from coco-mat mattresses to banana-wood bedside tables. The decor at Hostal Grau is simple and minimalist, emphasising natural materials and a stripped-back aesthetic over high-tech facilities. They even have an Off Room, where guests can enjoy a night without access to the internet, mobile phones or any other electronic devices, thanks to a purpose-built electromagnetic disabler.

This beach-front hotel, with its avant-garde design and stylish interior, is committed to sustainable and socially responsible practices as a way of providing ever better services. Their Princess 360º project involves creating a virtuous circle of mutually reinforcing and beneficial actions between clients, suppliers and the hotel. The hotel is a member of the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which monitors the hotel’s commitment and helps its owners to incorporate new sustainable practices when possible.

10. The W Hotel

One of the most iconic eco hotels in Barcelona, thanks to its prime location on the tip of the Barceloneta, the W Hotel is also committed to offering its guests the chance to enjoy five-star luxury without a guilty conscience. If you like the idea of opting for a sustainable hotel but aren’t fussed about the “green look”, then the W might just be the choice for you. The measures in place aren’t quite as stringent as some other green hotels on this list, but they do include reducing water waste in rooms and using LED lights and motion sensors to reduce energy consumption.
