Abraham Moya founded decorative design brand Coco&Wood Barcelona in 2012. Originally from Soria but having grown up in Catalonia next to his father’s workshop, Abraham was from early on able to discover and experiment with different materials, inventing his first practical tools and gadgets. Coco&Wood was first initiated when Abraham, together with his partner, started remodeling things for their own use. Soon enough, they started receiving requests from friends and acquaintances to complement their decoration at home with their handmade artifacts. Abraham decided to leave his day job and entered a new life and career as a designer, artist and an entrepreneur. Here’s he inspiring story behind Coco&Wood Barcelona.

What is the most unusual request you’ve had?

The rarest or the most specific request I ever received, has been the ‘restyling’ of a nail salon. The décor and upholstery of all the chairs had to be able to repel nail polish. It was an adventure in search for the perfect fabric!

What advice would you give to someone who was trying to break into the business?

To innovate, to follow your intuition. If you need to be looking at what other businesses do, learn from their mistakes, not from their successes!

What’s next?

To continue constructing new, exciting pieces that have an element of surprise.

What is your dream project?

To have my own shop / workshop where visitors can purchase things; to have a good time enjoying a drink and eating homemade dishes; to talk about art, architecture, design or attend workshops, from gardening and remodeling of applied electricity to furniture decoration – this is my dream!

What is your favorite museum or gallery?

I love the exhibitions at La Virreina, as well as some of the temporary exhibitions displayed at CCCB like Big Bang Data or Human+ .

If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?

Alvar Aalto.

How would you describe Coco&Wood Barcelona in 80 characters?

Cocoa&Wood Barcelona has several lines of work; restoration of furniture and decoration with preserved origin that are not subject to any changes, we simply ‘hunt’ these pieces down and offer them to our customers. On the other hand, we work with re-modeled furnishings, which we never leave in their original condition; carpeting, lacquering or otherwise modifying in some ways. The third line of work are our own creations, both in furniture and decoration; animal heads, lamps, SpringBox (wooden light box with a small exterior garden) or Nanohabitat (an all-natural fishbowl) always working using traditional methods, recycling all kinds of materials and respecting the environment.
