Hidden in the converted cellars of a building in central Madrid, this traditional Arab bath offers a variety of massages using traditional oils and a water circuit that takes you through three different temperature pools. Feel your stress melt away as you lie back in the hot and temperate water pools, then feel invigorated as you plunge into the cold water pool. The water circuit also includes the steam room and relaxation room, where you can sip green tea among the Moorish-style arches for the ultimate chilled experience. The hammam is quieter earlier in the day and on weekdays.

Hidden down a street just off the bustling Puerta del Sol, Esenzias is a pilates and yoga studio, spa and massage centre all under one roof, where you can indulge in a range of relaxing activities. Its Onsen spa is a Japanese style spa – its compact size means that it can be used by a maximum of eight people, which ensures it is usually quiet. The hour-long spa circuit includes a jacuzzi, a cold water pool and a wooden, Japanese-style pool. Esenzias is also a good place for a reasonably priced massage; from Monday-Thursday a 30-minute treatment is just €21.

Perhaps one of Madrid’s stranger spa experiences, this spa is centred around the practice of floating in pools of water filled with Epsom salts, which give them the same properties as the dead sea, allowing visitors to experience weightlessness and float easily without any effort at all. The spa also offers a range of massages and reflexology, the ideal accompaniment to time spent floating letting your worries melt away. The experience of floating is so relaxing, according to the spa, that one hour of floating is equivalent to four hours of sleep.
