Sometimes the most precious gems are right beneath your feet! Discover how German interior photographer Sebastian Erras has captured one of Barcelona‘s most stunning and yet probably most underrated features: its rich mosaic of tiled floors – and remember to look down next time you’re in town:

Casa Amatller

TCT: Your series of images of Barcelona floors is a striking tribute to some of the city’s more unassuming artwork. What was your inspiration for it?
I am running a similar project on Instagram called ‘Parisian floors.’ I started it in May 2015 and since then I have been exploring and documenting Paris’ rich variety of mosaic and tile floors. The feedback and success have been overwhelming.

TCT: Do you have an all-time favorite floor?

One of my favorite floors is the golden crown mosaic with flower ornaments in front of the Hotel Regina in Paris.

Circulo Liceu

TCT: What’s your best travel tip for cultural exploration?

I always avoid the big tourist hotspots and instead tend to go grab a coffee in a younger, hip area. It’s also always a good idea to ask locals what they would do and which neighborhoods they would recommend exploring. I find that most of the time they are more than happy to tell you something cool and fun about their neighborhood and share their best tips with those ready to ask!
