Katy Perry has come under fire after announcing a gig in Barcelona with a photo using the colours of the Spanish flag.

The city is part of Catalonia, which declared independence from Spain last year, although this has not been officially recognised as it is not considered legal under the country’s constitution.

Perry revealed on Instagram that she would be playing Barcelona on June 28.

She posted a video with a background of red and yellow – the colours of the Spanish flag – and the shield that appears on it.

The caption reads: ‘Trust and believe I’m coming for you too, Barcelona. See you June 28.’

Her post soon sparked a row between pro-independence Catalans and Spaniards.

One Catalan wrote: ‘What an idiotic woman. You’re coming to Catalonia not Span you son of a b****.’

Another said: ‘WTF? putting the Spanish shield in Catalonia is insulting Catalan people. Barcelona will not like them anymore. You should learn about the political and social situation where you visit.’

One fan explained: ‘Katie this flag represents the violence and oppression of the Spanish politics in Catalonia. Catalans like Spain but don’t want to be part of it and least by force. Please if you want to use a flag use the American, the European or the one of a dictadure.’

But some fans jumped to her defence.

‘Shut your mouth. Catalonia is Spain,’ one wrote.

While another said: ‘I am sorry y’all but officially Barcelona is still Spain… Do I think that Catalunia independence deserved at least a chance? YES.’

Perry will be playing Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona on June 28, with tickets going on sale on March 7.
