How Spain Celebrates Its National Day On October 12th

The Fiesta Nacional de España (National Holiday of Spain) is a Spanish public holiday that falls on October 12. Read on to discover the history behind the celebration and what Spaniards do to mark it.

The basics

Spain’s National Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas and is also sometimes known as Día de la Hispanidad, or Hispanic Day. If October 12 falls on a Sunday, the holiday is usually moved to the following Monday so Spaniards can still have an extra day off work.

History

Armed Forces Day

Spain’s national holiday coincides with the country’s Armed Forces Day and the military plays a significant part in the day’s celebrations. The main events on October 12 take part in Madrid, but regional capitals around the country also hold smaller events to mark the day. There is a military parade held in central Madrid that is attended by King Felipe, Queen Letizia, and their daughters, as well as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and other Spanish and foreign dignitaries.

One of the highlights of the day is a stunning aerial display by the Spanish Air Force acrobatics team, the Patrulla Águila. The aeroplanes let out red and yellow smoke to mimic the Spanish flag. One curiosity to look out for is the Spanish Legion, a unit of the Spanish Army whose mascot is a goat. Soldiers typically dress up an actual goat in a cap so that it can take part in the parade. The city tends to be quiet on October 12, as families enjoy the day off together and some shops and bars close.

Around the world

The day is also celebrated around the world: in the United States it is known as Columbus Day; Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay and Belize; Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in Mexico, Chile and Colombia; and Discovery Day in the Bahamas. While in the United States, Columbus Day is a chance for Italian-Americans to celebrate their heritage, in much of Latin America, Día de la Raza has come to symbolize the opposite of Columbus Day—a celebration of native cultures and traditions that resisted the arrival of Europeans on American soil.
