Come the summertime Barcelona’s beaches become the best place in town to hang out. Here are some of the best beach bars, clubs and chiringuitos in the Catalan capital.
Café del Mar Club
This is without a doubt the hottest new addition to Barcelona’s beach bar scene. The iconic Ibizan institution Café del Mar opened its doors in May this year and is fast becoming the favourite hang-out of the city’s young, rich and fun-lovers. The club has a private swimming pool with luxury beds around it, perfect for topping up your tan. Of course Café del Mar wouldn’t what it is if it wasn’t for the music – there are live DJs performing daily throughout the Summer.
La Guingeta de la Barceloneta
Carles Abellan is one of Barcelona’s leading chefs, famous for his restaurants Suculent, Tapas 24 and Bravo. La Guingeta de la Barceloneta is his tribute to the Spanish chiringuito – a seasonal beach bar – serving a selection of tapas as well as refreshing cocktails and fresh juices to help you keep cool. The food is simple but the drinks and the view make it worth the visit if you’re looking for a relaxed venue on the busy Barceloneta beach.
The Bogatell is considered the locals beach in Barcelona, quieter and more casual than the beaches near the Barceloneta. This is reflected in the atmosphere of the beach bars that can be found there, of which Vai Moana is a local favourite. Its success is probably down to the combination of freshly prepared food, easy-drinking cocktails and friendly service and of course its location right on the beach-front.

Another locals’ favourite located further away from the crowds of the Barceloneta, Boo sits on a pier perched over the waves on the New Mar Bella beach. The venue includes a restaurant with a more dressed-up feel and a downstairs beach club – both of which serve a selection of fresh seafood and fish, including sea urchins, oysters and large prawns all cooked to order on the outdoor grill.

This is the perfect place to hang out if you’re looking for a fun, friendly atmosphere and an eclectic crowd of locals and travellers. The Chiringuito Begay is an LGBT-friendly bar located just by the nudist section of the Mar Bella beach and is known for its lively parties and special events organised throughout the warmer months. On the other hand, this is also a great breakfast spot offering fresh juices, smoothies and pastries with an amazing view.

Salt Beach Club
Part of the facilities of the W Hotel – one of Barcelona’s most exclusive hotels – the Salt Beach Club is a trendy, modern beach bar located on the very tip of the Barceloneta. The bar offers a selection of specially designed cocktails which reflect the atmosphere, while the snacks list includes international favourites such as pizza, burgers and nachos. The venue’s location has the advantage of offering views not only of the sea but also of the city and the beachfront.

The Coconut Club
A Caribbean-inspired bar and restaurant, The Coconut Club is a trendy beach-side hang-out with an exotic feel. Located alongside the night-clubs and lounges which line the Port Olimpic, this venue has an altogether more relaxed atmosphere than its neighbours and manages to draw in locals as well as tourists from the beach. On the menu you’ll find everything from grilled sandwiches and nachos to healthy salads – all with a Caribbean twist.
