The coastal Galician city of A Coruña is big on food, just like the rest of the region, particularly when it comes to fresh seafood and artisanal products such as local cheeses and sausages. Here’s our pick of some of the best tapas bars in A Coruña, where you can sample all these and more.

1. Cúrcuma

With its bright blue wood-panelled walls and low-hanging lighting, Cúrcuma is a modern tapas bar, serving tasty dishes. Try the squid ink croquettes and prawns in puff pastry. They also serve larger meals such with an Italian twist such as risotto and cannelloni.

2. Mantelería 3

Located in the centre of the city, this tapas bar and coffee shop has a quaint feel, with its whitewashed wood-panelled walls and colourful stained glass windows. The bar is topped with delicious looking pintxos bites, from smoked salmon with cream cheese and mango balsamic vinegar to roasted pulled pork with potatoes.

3. Barbería

This quirky tapas bar and restaurant whose name means ‘Barber’s Shop’ is a veritable hipster hangout and is decorated with hairdressing mirrors and old barber’s chairs. The tapas and main meals here are beautifully presented in artistic ways – inside mini casserole pots, on black slate or on mini spoons, and are always colourful and bright. The bar also has live music in the evenings.

4. Tapa Negra

With its chunky stone walls and wooden tables, this trendy tapas bar serves delicious and innovative tapas bites. Think vegetables tempura served in a flower pot, crispy blue cheese croquettes, and scrambled eggs with prawns and octopus.

5. La Bombilla

This cosy little bar and beer place in the centre of the city has both standing tables inside or outside along the street. The tapas here are simple, but tasty. Think Spanish tortilla served with a piece of baguette, calamari (battered squid rings) or meatballs with potatoes. Don’t forget to try their signature ‘bombas‘ – deep-fried, crispy potato bombs filled with ground meat.

6. O Viñedo de Tito

This bar is a great place for beer and seafood lovers, and simply having a good time. Always lively, O Viñedo de Tito serves quality seafood, which is sometimes cooked outside over hot coals. Think plates of octopus, scallops, mussels and grilled sardines. Choose to stand outside on the street or in the cosy interior at tables made from old wine barrels.

7. El Tequeño

Located on the grand María Pita Square in the Old Town, El Tequeño makes for a good spot for people watching, as well as dining and drinking. The great value tapas bites cost just €1.50 each and include things such as Spanish tortilla, chorizo in wine, rice with sausage, and meatballs in tomato sauce. They also specialise in pulpo al Gallego, Galician-style boiled octopus, served on a wooden dish and sprinkled with paprika. Don’t leave without trying some of their namesake tequeños – small fried bread twists filled with melted cheese, popular in Venezuela and Colombia.
