With its great location right in the top left hand corner of Spain along the Atlantic Ocean, the Galician city of A Coruña makes for an ideal city break, offering beaches, culture and history. But, when night draws in, you’ll find it’s a great city of partying, too. Here’s our pick of the top ten bars in A Coruña.

1. El Pato Mareado

El Pato Mareado, which translates as ‘The Drowsy Duck’, is a cosy at atmospheric place for a night out. With a ceiling plastered with newspaper print, it’s filled with odd knickknacks, from old-fashioned lamps and clocks to bookshelves packed with quirky odds and ends. It’s best for cocktails and beer, which they pair with a dish of salted popcorn, but if you’re feeling hungry they offer main meals, too. Think chicken fillet, baked cod or stir-fried noodles with clams.

2. A Repichoca

Colourfully bizarre and quirky, A Repichoca is the best place in the city for listening to live traditional Galician folk music. Plastered with bright murals and pieces of art, it also shares similarities to an Irish pub with its dark green walls and wooden bar. In fact, Galicia shares a lot with the Celtic cultures, so don’t be surprised to hear fiddles, whistles, and even bagpipes here.

A modern and chic cider bar, Casa Lelín is the perfect spot if you want to try some of northern Spain’s renowned cider. While the neighbouring regions of Asturias and the Basque Country are better known for their cider than Galicia, you can still get the chance to taste Spain’s unique cider here, too. Pair your tart, crisp drink with a range of pintxos and tasty menu of seafood.

This spacious, modern bar offers one of the largest beer selections in the city, with more than 200 different varieties, including nine beers on tap and many bottles from both famous and micro-breweries across the world. With its black-and-white chequered walls and purple-hued lighting, Café Royale La Coruña is a chic and stylish hangout where you can drink, dance or kick back with friends. As the name suggests, El Cubanito is a Cuban-themed bar. Unassuming and a little rough round the edges from the outside, this place is about as authentically Cuban you can get in A Coruña. Atmospheric and cosy, it offers some of the best and most elaborate cocktails in the city, suitably tropical-looking with iced fruity blends, flavoured syrups, pieces of fruit and fancy stirrers stuck in the top. There are, of course, catchy Cuban beats to get you in the mood to party, too.

With its industrial chic feel, colourfully patterned tiles and potted plants hanging from the ceiling, it’s easy to see why this place won an award as one of the best European bars in the Bar & Restaurant Design Awards.
