Head to A Coruña in Spain’s northwestern Galician coast for an original escape — and make the most of your stay at our pick of the port city’s top hotels.

Most sunseekers who decamp to Spain every summer head to the southern costas, but savvy Iberophiles are increasingly discovering the many benefits of the northwestern Galician coast. The combination of a buzzing dining scene, lively nightlife and beaches to rival any in Europe makes the seaside city port of A Coruña a destination to make anyone rethink their next Spanish getaway. Here are the top places to stay in the Galician port city.

1. Noa Boutique

It must have taken a lot of effort to make a hotel look as chic as Noa, but it was worth it. Glass plays a major role in creating the light-filled spaces that characterise this waterfront boutique property, nowhere more so than in the guest rooms — each offers gorgeous views over the adjacent cove. Head to the rooftop terrace for the full panorama, best enjoyed from the sleek infinity pool or hot tub. It’s a little removed from the city itself, making it an ideal base for a luxurious longer stay with a few day trips.

2. Hotel Lois

You’ll find this small family-run hotel tucked away down an alleyway between the port and Orzán beach in the centre of A Coruña. It’s housed in an attractively restored 19th-century building, with just 11 rooms, all simply decorated with clean contemporary styling. It’s an ideal base if you want to explore local flavours — excellent traditional Galician fare with an emphasis on the sea is served in their restaurant. Dining tip: don’t skip dessert.

3. Hotel Mar del Plata

While it’s hard to get too excited about its underwhelming architecture, step inside the Hotel Mar de Plata and you’re likely to be very pleasantly surprised. Top Spanish designer Oscar Santomé has transformed the interiors with a fresh, contemporary palette that flows into each of the guest rooms. Organic toiletries and rainfall showers come as standard, or upgrade for an intimate nook with a freestanding bathtub, perfect for soaking à deux. A superb romantic retreat.

4. Meliá Maria Pita

Chain Hotel

Looking for familiar creature comforts without sacrificing on setting? A glass conservatory entrance and swathes of marble certainly lend the Meliá Maria Pita an air of grandeur, but it’s also right on the Paseo Marítimo seafront, overlooking the sweeping sandy bay and Orzán and Riazor beaches. This means lovely views along the coast from most of its rooms, as well as the modern service you’d expect from the upmarket Meliá brand.

5. Eurostars Ciudad de la Coruña

Positioned on the green tip of the city’s famous peninsula that’s practically surrounded by ocean, few come close to Eurostars Ciudad de la Coruña for setting. It’s certainly no slouch when it comes to facilities either, with one of the largest and most innovative thalassotherapy spas in Spain. If you’d rather have your saltwater therapy at the source, there’s also the sandy cove of Praia de Adormideiras just opposite.

6. Exe Coruña

While slightly far from the action for your average visitor, being just a few minutes’ walk from both the train and bus stations means A Coruña’s big draws are only a short ride away. Most of the rooms have received a modern makeover, with upgraded accommodation featuring big soaking tubs. A free breakfast service and plenty of dining options nearby also make this one worth considering. Good prices are often available, leaving you with extra pennies to eat and drink your way around town.

7. Hotel Plaza

The striking cross-hatch facade, which lights up dramatically at night, sets the tone for a stay at the Plaza. Interior design combines a swish contemporary vibe with chic neutral tones, in the guest rooms as much as the swanky SkyBar rooftop terrace. The location puts it within easy access of shopping and transport links, including the busy port just a few minutes away.

8. Hotel Zenit Coruña

Business Hotel, Chain Hotel

Just one street back from where the Playa de Riazor meets Playa de Orzán, the Hotel Zenit is a perfect spot for beach lovers visiting A Coruña. It’s in a major shopping area, with plenty of gastro options within a short stroll. Feeling lazy? The hotel’s Marola Restaurant offers a decent menu of Galician cooking. Your room also has a pillow menu for a good night’s slumber before heading back down the next morning to fill up on their breakfast buffet.

9. Hotel Avenida

Overlooking a highway junction, the Hotel Avenida isn’t going to win any prizes for its location. But it does mean super-easy access by road and the city’s main train station is within walking distance. Rooms are quiet, neat and modern, and thankfully well-soundproofed. Local seafood features in the hotel’s Eira restaurant, plus there’s a bar-cafe for both breakfast and evening drinks.

10. Hotel Riazor

Short of sleeping right on them, you can’t spend a night closer to the golden sands of Riazor Beach than staying at its eponymous hotel. An inside-and-out update has given the hotel a fresh vibe with touches of designer dazzle. The setting ensures most rooms offer sea views, with upper levels affording broad panoramas of the bay. Can’t choose between the numerous local dining options? The hotel’s own restaurant opens for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
