High up in the Carpathians and yet easily accessible from the city of Brasov, Poiana Brasov is home to 22km of downhill ski slopes and numerous hiking routes. If you’re craving more adrenaline, you can also go ice skating and tobogganing. From Dracula-inspired lodgings to contemporary hotels reflecting the feel of the surrounding fir trees, we know that choosing where to relax after a long day outside can be a difficult task. Here are Culture Trip’s top picks of the best hotels in Poiana Brasov.

The twinkling lights and snow-dusted trees are a warm welcome at this 127-room hotel, located on the edge of the Poiana Brasov resort. Accommodation ranges from single rooms to deluxe apartments with high ceilings, exposed beams, glass walls and wood-clad bathrooms. Fuel up in one of the six on-site restaurants, and make the difficult choice between fine-dining, an après-ski bar or a standalone traditional Romanian hut.

The restaurant features cosy fires and sheepskin throws and serves traditional Romanian dishes, such as bulz – oven-roasted polenta and melted white cheese.

With its superb spa, you’ll find it hard to tear yourself away from the cosy confines of this modern, four-star hotel. It has a 25-metre pool, bubbling jacuzzi, fir-scented sauna and gym. Children are well catered for, too, with kids’ clubs and playgrounds on-site. After a long day on the slopes, choose from four restaurants – including an Italian, a relaxed lounge in the forest and Tosca, which has a sommelier and great range of wine including local tipples.

Rooms are contemporary and minimalist, with a neutral colour scheme and natural stone and wood decor. The 2,000 square-metre spa has a swimming pool, gym, sauna and outdoor hot tub, plus ten treatment rooms – a hot stone massage is divine after a day’s skiing. Plus, the Altitude restaurant serves delicious hearty dishes, like duck soup and foie gras salad.

6. Ana Hotels Bradul

Surrounded by pine trees, this hotel has a more tucked-away feel, with rooms reflecting nature – think natural wood flooring, soft furnishings in earthy green tones and contemporary animal artwork. The king junior suite has ample space and a bright lounge, and as an added extra, families can unroll the sofa bed for extra sleeping space.

With its red towers, dramatic stone staircase and dark timber beams, the House of Dracula has a Gothic feel to match its spooky-sounding name. But don’t be fooled, it’s a warm welcome that awaits – staff are cheery, the food is good and rooms are comfortable. Some have baths and log burners, others have printed armchairs and sofas. Our tip? Recharge with a spa treatment – they range from aromatic facials to sea salt scrubs and full-body massages.
