Widely known in popular culture as a mythical place, the historical region of Transylvania in central Romania has long captured imaginations across the world.

Fast forward nearly two centuries from the days of Dracula, and Romania is establishing itself as a top travel destination in its own right, with many unique spots. Here you’ll not only find ancient medieval towns, stunning painted monasteries and fantasy forests, but a lively and modern capital city, Bucharest.

The Transylvanian-style clay eco-castle is guaranteed to capture any imagination

Undeniably, however, it is those fairytale locations which really bring people here and there’s no shortage of magical sites to satisfy those looking for a bit of Gothic intrigue.

Introducing the Fairy Valley Clay Castle

Nestled in the foothills of the stunning Carpathian Mountains, set against a scenic backdrop that wouldn’t look out of place in a Disney movie, you will find a weird and wonderful Hobbit-like hamlet.

The two owners, Razvan and Gabriela Vasile, swapped their home near Bucharest to embark on a building project which would eventually draw scores of tourists hoping to catch a glimpse of this fantastical construction.

Together with the help of a specialist architect and local craftsmen, the couple designed and built this eco-castle without using any modern materials. Everything, even the paint, is environmentally friendly and natural, with clay, straw and wood the structure’s main components.

This newly built structure has been designed to emulate a storybook dwelling, and will soon be transformed into a hotel allowing guests to explore the secluded location and dine on organic, home-cooked meals.

Eco credentials aside, this is a magical place to spend time. The secluded location is a paradise for hikers and nature-lovers, not to mention those who are fascinated with the tales and legends of Carpathian folklore. Could there be a more fitting setting for a fairytale castle?
