The district of Bolognina lies just north of the center of Bologna, a vibrant Italian city that benefits from its geographical location at the base of the Appenine mountain range and its balmy climate. The city is steeped in rich ancient history, with medieval churches and historical monuments around every street corner. The city is also home to the oldest university in the world, with students who relish the city’s lively bar scene. Head just north of the city to the Bolognina district to witness this for yourself – here are our five favorites.

The location of this particular bar is what sets it apart from the other establishments in the city. Customers can choose to enjoy a cocktail on the terrace that overlooks the spectacular Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù. The church was designed and constructed at the turn of the 20th century, and its imposing architectural design dominates the skyline of Bolognina. The bar is also a short walk from the Teatro Testino, so it is the ideal location for a glass of wine or a cocktail and to reflect after catching a play.

While the primary purpose of this restaurant is to provide delicious burgers to hungry locals, the bar also offers customers a selection of Belgian draft beers. The décor is contemporary and urban chic, with tasteful wooden tables, a blackboard wall and low hanging lights. Head to this restaurant to sample some quality Belgian bars, from blond lagers to double malt ales just north of the city center.

3. Black Fire Pub

The Black Fire Pub is a traditional and cozy pub where guests can enjoy a drink from a selection of draft and bottled beers. The décor is simple but contemporary, with a tasteful exposed brick wall and modern artwork. The low-hanging lights also adds to the ambiance. As well as an extensive wine list, mixologists create a range of traditional cocktails with a modern twist. The bar occasionally showcases talent from local musicians and DJs.

5. Krisstal

This bar is in unconventional hybrid of wine bar, restaurant and bakery, selling sweet and savory creations. The drink list at the bar specializes in European wines and innovative cocktails. The establishment is built over two floors, and the space extends outside onto the large terrace. In the summer months, the venue puts on gigs, hosting local musicians and DJs. The atmosphere at these events is particularly lively and electric.
