The popular television series Game of Thrones or GoT is an epic fantasy tale about a world that is eerily similar to our own medieval history books. Written by the American science fiction author George R.R. Martin, the series was first released in 2011 and holds a few similar elements to scenarios found in Nordic mythology, such as giants, dragons, blood-thirsty rulers, and harrowing conditions. The series also features the Icelandic actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who plays “The Mountain”. If you’re a fan of this series or you have a penchant for epic fantasy, then these tours are for you.

Vatnajokull Glacier

Experience GoT’s Iceland locations with a special guide

In this tour, tour guests are taken to the landmarks in Iceland that were featured in the epic television series. Because of Iceland’s landscape, it was especially fitting for scenes occurring “North of the Wall”, in an icy landscape of frozen zombies. Your guide will be Jon Thor Benediktsson, who was the guide for the Game of Thrones crew during their filming of the third season in Iceland, so he is definitely one of the top resources.

This tour will specifically take you to where the following scenes took place: where Samwell Tarly and Lord Commander Mormont were attacked by the White Walkers North of the Wall during their duty as the Night’s Watchmen; where Jon Snow and Ygritte had their first sensual encounter in a cave pool; and where Jon Snow and Ygritte and other Free Folk walked to reach the Wall. The tour will also inform you about actual Vikings who lived in the area and lived in a similar manner to the Free Folk.

Grjotagja

Learn of Iceland’s cultural history in this GoT tour

This tour will take you to all of the main filming locations as well (except without the guide who was the actual guide for the Game of Thrones crew) as to visit important monuments in Icelandic cultural history like Thingvellir National Park, the site of the first democracy.

Follow in the footsteps of your favourite GoT characters in this tour

This tour is another great option that promises to take you to the following specific scene locations: where Arya Stark and The Hound took their journey to The Bloody Gate (S4E08); where Lord Baelish and Sansa Stark walked to get to Eyire (S4E05);
where the fight for Arya Stark between Lady Brienne and The Hound took place (S4E10); where Arya Stark was found on her way to find a ship to Braavos after leaving The Hound (S4E10); where Styr is introduced and the Wildlings and Thenns meet in the canyon (S4E01); where the Wildlings and Thenns attack what is often called Olly’s farm/village (S4E03); and last but not least, the magical place where the Dragons hunt for goats (S4E06).
