Budapest, a popular backpacker destination, is teeming with hostels. From party-friendly stays in the heart of the action to chic boutique retreats for the more chilled visitor, the best hostels in Budapest are budget-friendly without skimping on quality.

The immaculate ensuite rooms at the Three Cats all have beds on a stylish mezzanine up a wooden stairway so they don’t take bookings for visitors under 10 or over 60. But everyone else will enjoy this cheerful hostel with a galleried courtyard and communal kitchen. You couldn’t get much closer to Blaha Lujza tér underground station without sleeping on the platform, so all the major city sights are just a couple of metro stops away.

Bazar Hostel

Opened in 2018, this 11-room hostel offers bright dorms close to the Great Synagogue. The century-old building was once a rock music venue and, before that, the biggest toy shop in Budapest. The wacky communal lounge is a lively hangout with sofas, computers and a wall-mounted projector for movie nights. The equally colourful shared kitchen offers free tea and espressos – plus oil and spices for cooking, and there are several supermarkets nearby. The surrounding streets are heaving with bars and bistros, such as street-food-tastic Attaboy, serving herby chickpea burgers or spicy beef tortillas with all the trimmings.

The community-minded staff at Maverick are determined to keep things cheap, cool, fun and to offset the CO2 emissions from the hotel. There’s a communal bar and lounge area, and bright, minimalist rooms that vary from ensuite private doubles to eight-bedded dorms. Linen and towels are included and there’s a breakfast buffet for a small fee. The riverfront Nehru Part gardens and the banks of the Danube are a short walk away and close by the lodge are bars such as Cech In, a Czech-style pub with draught beers and authentic meaty dishes.

Simple, urban style comes at rock-bottom rates in this big, modern hostel in the trendy District VII. Besides smart, functional rooms and dorms with singles, doubles or bunks, there’s a 24-hour reception, guest kitchen, billiards and table football. Vibrant District VII aka Erzsébetváros, once the Jewish Quarter, now hums with tempting bars and cafes, such as the welcoming Kandalló, which serves craft beers and pickle-stacked burgers at wooden tables.

There’s a buffet breakfast to set you up for a day of sightseeing and a friendly crowd of travellers with whom you can trade notes. What’s more, the hostel is only a 30-minute walk from the Citadella fortress, sitting pretty on top of Gellért Hill.

Hungarian architect Adolf Feszty (brother of the more famous painter, Árpád) designed this Renaissance revival palace on central Andrássy Avenue in 1882, now topped with statues of the winged Roman god Mercury and two griffins. A short stroll from the ferris wheel and the Danube beyond and almost next door to domed St Stephen’s, this grand building in a star location contains a surprisingly affordable modern hostel. Your stay in one of the private rooms or dorms includes access to an outdoor terrace, free tea and coffee, a steam room, board games and DVDs.

The twin and double rooms are perfect for couples looking for an affordable, hotel-quality stay. There are also both mixed and female-only dorms for larger groups, as well as those travelling alone.
