Although Omlett serves an excellent dinner menu, it is open from 8am, and perfect for those who want to start the day with a good breakfast or brunch. Hidden in a quiet street in Szombathely’s outskirts, this place is ideal for a peaceful, hearty breakfast. Choose from eggs, hot sandwiches, baked sausages and the meaty szalonna (similar to bacon) as well as cakes and special drinks such as bio-teas, Omlett is a perfect place for a great breakfast.

Lángossütő at Ady-square, bus station

Bakery, Nightclub, Hungarian, Wine, Beer

So, what is lángos?Often referred to as Hungarian pizza, it is actually a thick layer of pastry, with a crunchy exterior (fried in hot oil) and soft and tender inside. There are several toppings you can choose from: salt and garlic (not recommended as a breakfast), cheese, sour cream and cheese and so on, in every combination. This bakery in Ady square was nominated as one of the best ten lángos makers in Hungary, so it is worth a try.

Király bistro

Bistro, Hungarian

Király bistro on Király street has been in the same spot for decades and the street would be unimaginable without it. Even the faces haven’t changed, the same old characters welcoming one and all to the bistro in the morning. This place is a traditional standing bistro, so there are no chairs, only high tables where you can enjoy the freshest breakfast you have ever had. Milk, with still-warm, soft bread or baked sausages and hurka (something like black pudding), even a large selection of cold buffet meals, and all with the warmest of welcomes. It is certainly an experience to have breakfast here.

This bakery belongs to a bigger chain which sells products countywide but is still friendly and welcoming with a great staff. There are chairs where you can stop, enjoy your chosen breakfast and watch the world go by outside on the Main Square. Try the fresh bread rolls with some milk or fruit juice or some of the sweet pastries. If you start your day here you won’t leave dissatisfied, nor will you be hungry until midday for sure.

Gizi grillbar

This grillbar is very popular, despite being hidden away in a narrow street leading to the Main Square. It offers a wide variety of cold and hot dishes from early in the morning. Hot sandwiches, small pizzas, deep fried vegetables and meat with great pickles, a great treat early in the day. There are some tables as well, where you can sit down to eat your chosen brunch, and take-away options too.

Café Frei

Hidden in the courtyard, but known by all the locals: Café Frei is a popular spot to meet friends and chat about the important things in life. It has an unbelievably long list of posh coffees and unusual teas, and you will find it hard to choose. Accompanied by top-notch service and devilishly skillful baristas, this is the place for you if you are obsessed with caffeine, and don’t miss the great cakes you can have with your hot drink too.

Marco Polo Burger Bar

Mammoth-sized bread rolls filled with fresh ingredients; the end result is a burger here that is almost too big to eat at one sitting. There are at least 30 options, including vegetarian ones, filled with apple and goat cheese. You can enjoy this burger heaven at two city locations, or you can order over the phone. It is probably fair to say that there isn’t an inhabitant of Szombathely who hasn’t eaten here at least once (including the author).
