This old district in the heart of Athens, Greece near Monastiraki has been enjoying a new breath of fresh air. Psirri (also spelled Psiri, Psyri, and Psyrri) is considered the low-key area to enjoy a night with friends. Here is our selection of its best bars.

Barrett

Industrial decor, great music, a relaxed vibe, and an array of great drinks and cocktails is what you get in Barrett. This newcomer in Psirri is a great place for late-morning coffee and homemade sweets or for after-work drinks with friends. Things get serious at night with various guest DJ sets exploring jazz, soul, and indie rock tunes. All in all, Barrett is the cool hangout spot we were all looking for in the capital city.

Tranzistor

Bar, Cafe, Coffee, Greek, Pub Grub

This hidden bistroteque has a relaxed, artsy, and spontaneous vibe where people are not afraid to dance late until the wee hours of the morning. Perfect for a late-night drink, Tranzistor has a great food and drink menu with very affordable prices. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a place at the bar inside. If not, just hang out outside on the street and mingle with the crowd. Trust us. You will spend a lot of time there.

Cantina Social

Bar, Pub Grub, Greek

With its resolutely alternative vibe, and its vast array of Russian beers, Cantina Social is a small joint with a minimalist interior, tasty cocktails, and a cozy atmosphere. The bar plays mostly indie music but will spontaneously revisit dance, Latin, and reggae hits. Most nights, black-and-white movies are projected onto the surrounding apartment buildings. The bar also hosts several exhibitions. If you want to give your nights out some edge, you know where to go.

Psirra

As one of the first bars (and probably the smallest) in the neighborhood popular among the younger crowds, Psirra is the place to be for a night of lethal rakomelo (a warm beverage with raki and honey). Sit at one of the small tables, order a pitcher, and start the best game of people-watching. http://instagram.com/p/z4iBTmgWjR/?tagged=psirra

Concierge Athens Café

Bar, Cafe, Greek, Coffee

This new space is an all-day cafe/bar offering breakfast, lunch, and brunch options as well as extensive drink options at night. These include straight alcohols, cool cocktails, beers, and wine. The cafe is located on the ground floor of the Concierge Athens, which rents apartments and studios for long and short stays in the city. With its large doors always open, there is no doubt the Concierge Athens Café is a friendly and welcoming bar where residents and clients alike feel at home. Grab your favorite book and spend the afternoon there. While you’re at it, make sure to try the refreshing frozen mojito, the hit of this summer.

Old Fashioned

Bar, Pub Grub, Greek

This Miaouli-based bar is for all the old souls out there. Old Fashioned is a place where everyone agrees: The atmosphere is warm and friendly, the staff is always amiable and smiling, and the music is just what it ought to be. With a long cocktail menu at affordable prices (the strawberry caïpirinha is worth trying), here you are sure to enjoy a great night with friends or your significant other.

Drugstore

Bar, Pub Grub, Greek

The cheapest bar in town doesn’t need much introduction. But for the ‘Psirri virgins’ out there, here are a few things you must remember. Drugstore, with its motto, ‘The more you drink, the less you pay,’ is the bar that serves cheap (though not lethal) drinks and can be rented for free for private events. Open daily, you can find one Drugstore in Exarcheia and one in Psirri as well. You can also shop a wide collection of T-shirts, vintage CDs and vinyl, books, and handmade jewelry. The place regularly organizes small gigs, stand-up comedy shows, and all kinds of parties. Not convinced yet? Go check it out.

Astron

Cocktail Bar, Bar, Cocktails, Greek

Astron Bar is one of the best underground electronic bars in town. With its intriguing atmosphere, Astron welcomes major DJs who know how to set the roof on fire. The resident DJs feature names such as Jimmy Lazarides, Maddy Jo, and DJ Yianni among others. Astron takes an annual summer break, but it always comes back in full power once September rolls around.

The Party

Let’s get this party started! For live music, The Party is the place to be. With live jazz sessions on Wednesdays and rock and pop gigs on weekends, The Party is the bar to discover local and foreign musicians while enjoying drinks.
