Chalandri (or Halandri) is a northern suburb of Athens and has been around since ancient times, when it used to be called Flya, and boasts the playwright Euripides as one of its most famous residents. Today it remains a residential yet popular area, bordered by main roads and a Metro station easily connecting it to the center, and is mostly known for its shopping opportunities and bar scene. With a constellation of small shops and cafés – connected with leafy pedestrian streets and arranged around the city’s main square and the church of Saint Nicholas – Chalandri is a charming neighborhood just waiting to be explored.

Get Your Juices Flowing

Bar, Juice Bar

Looking for a post-workout refuel, a great way to start your morning, or a healthy lunch spot? Look no further and head to Bazaki instead. This cute juice bar – whose name means ‘small jar’ – is run by two childhood friends, Maria Dina and Stavroula, and serves organic juices and smoothies, as well as healthy snacks and treats, and even fresh daily soups. Just as Hippocrates said, ‘let your food be thy medicine.’ http://instagram.com/p/3gEA40QKIB/?taken-by=tobazaki

Shop Till You Drop

Shop, Store

Chalandri has plenty of stores and boutiques but one that easily stands out is Anthologia Humana. This adorable store offers a wide selection of carefully handpicked clothes, shoes and accessories as well as home goods. You can spend hours searching through the treasures on sale and will surely find something to take home with you. Fair warning: you might leave with an empty wallet. http://instagram.com/p/9tbxUFlgbQ/?taken-at=147874003

Pamper Yourself

Spa

Enter new realms of relaxation at Cocoon Urban Spa. This little oasis located between Chalandri and Agia Paraskevi (another hip norther suburb) is a cocoon of zen you won’t want to leave after you’ve stepped inside. For those who don’t mind a little bit of pain, treat yourself to a deep tissue massage, or opt for the Balinese massage. The spa even offers yoga and pilates classes, a Jacuzzi, sauna and hammam where you can indulge in a traditional oriental relaxation. If pampering is wrong, who wants to be right? http://instagram.com/p/0-whmcoCV1/?taken-by=cocoonurbanspa

Have A Good Cuppa

While you’re wandering around, drop by Kokkini Svoura. Located on, Agiou Georgiou, one of the main streets, you may easily find it, since it’s the only café in the street. This small café is a hidden gem where you can enjoy a selection of teas, a cup of Greek coffee (if you’re not a fan, no worries, there are other options) or scrumptious sandwiches, tapas, and baked goods. On weekends, like many cafés in town, it serves a tasty brunch menu.
Kokkini Svoura is well-known for their lovely cocktails based on own recipes as well as home-made syrups. On warm days, make sure to find a spot outside in the charming back yard. http://instagram.com/p/3t51KCRttt/?tagged=kokkinisvoura

Enjoy Some Naxos Cheese

Naxos-born and bred Manolis Koufopoulos is a cheese maker who excels at his game. So much so, that he even created a special type of traditional cheese. By exploiting his home island’s traditional techniques he produces unique cheeses in a variation of forms (hard and semi-hard, and even cheese spread) as well as other delectable dairy products. Even better, you do not need to travel all the way to the island (although you should, it’s an island of pure beauty), as all of his products are available at Tyrokomia Naxou, located in Chalandri.

Go Green

Sometimes all you want is get away from the city and breathe some fresh air. Lucky for you, Athens is surrounded by three mountains, and Chalandri is located beneath the mount of Penteli, allowing you to get your dose of fresh O2 in a jiffy. Take the opportunity to grab a bite to eat from the tasty snack joint the Falafel Project before heading up there for a hike, a jog or simply a stunning view of the city. And while you’re there, try to visit the old Pendeli monastery as well. http://instagram.com/p/BCkZOaWwoIW/?taken-by=falafelproject&hl=en
