A Budget Traveler's Guide To Athens

You probably know this already, but let’s just review it once more for emphasis: you don’t need to be rich to travel. In fact, it is perfectly possible to enjoy a city trip without breaking the bank. Even in Athens. While you may not be able to do every single thing on your list, you can still enjoy the city and everything it has to offer on a budget. Here’s your guide to appreciate Athens when your wallet is feeling a bit slim.
What to See and Do
Visit a Free Museum
First off, you must visit the Acropolis. But don’t worry, the city has a few museums that are completely free. The Athens University History Museum, founded in 1987, has a wide collection of historical memorabilia, serving as an important guide to modern Greek history. The museum also hosts various lectures and conferences, as well as music and theater events and exhibitions. For the more musically inclined, the Museum of Greek Popular Instruments in Plaka is home to a 1,200-strong collection of Greek popular musical instruments. While the museum often organizes events and performances, visitors can drop by the museum shop to buy books, CDs and musical instruments.

Take a Free Walking Tour
Take advantage of one of the numerous free walking tours available in the city with the Meet A Local service, among others. By registering at least 72 hours before your arrival, you get to enjoy a local tour for free, discovering Athens beyond the ancient sights and unearthing secret spots and urban legends about the city.
The Athens Central Market and Flea Market
The Central Market is an excellent place to visit, offering a chance to discover new food items and local spices. Arrive early to score the freshest produce. Located close by is the Monastiraki flea market, located off the eponymous square. Open every day, the market comprises shops offering a wide variety of goods such as clothes, old books, coins, vintage vinyl and other decorative items.

Where to Eat
Feyrouz
Located in the heart of the center off Aiolou street, Feyrouz is your gateway to oriental street food. Here you’ll taste delicious lahmajoun and peinirli, while the menu also includes soups and salads as well as deserts. This place is definitely ideal for grabbing food on the go.

But be warned, this place is so popular you will likely need to arm yourself with patience to get an order in.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.
Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.
Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.
Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.
We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
